Why couldn’t he have gotten that in the open market? He’s already making $2.5M on a prove me deal. He has proven he’s far better than his $4+ million teammate in Cam Talbot. He’s having a better season than fellow UFAs in Bobrovsky and Varlamov who are already making far more than $4.5M.
Look what Scort Darling got with Carolina. The guy was the back up for Chicago and got $16.6M x 4 years. This is very much in line with what starting goaltenders get.
You and I have already had a similar conversation in the Rittich thread and it’ll probably end up the same way. This is what I figured Koskinen would get and he got it. I have a number in my mind on what Rittich might get and we’ll just have to see what happens.
This doesn't work unless you tell everyone the number you're thinking.

Lost in this is they had Brossoit last year who low and behold gets away from that greasy stink and is having an amazing year. E=NG
You know that Talbot will become much better after they trade him. I'd seriously consider trading for him, and didn't Treliving try pretty hard to land him from New York?
Look at Dubnyk. After he got treatment for his Oiler induced PTSD, he's been very decent.
So Talbot must be shipped out by the deadline. Nothing like forcing him to play on that team while knowing what they think of him.
I wonder if the fear really is that no amount of money is going to attract anybody to the team and therefore they are now overpaying and early on before other teams can compete.... it is the only possible explanation I have. Knowing everyone had to agree to the signing is amazing.
As for Rittich, if this sets the bar too high, you sign him to a 1 year deal for whatever the cap lets you sign him for, even if it is a significant overpayment. A show me you can do this back to back years. If he performs then you lock him up long term and if not, you saved yourself multiple years of overpaying for a average goalie. I figured the Oil would do something similar.
Not worried. Rittich seems like the type of guy that would play for the 2nd place Flames for a bucket of bananas.
