BSD to the All-Star Game?
W: 10 (T-20th)
SV%: .925 (9th)
GAA: 2.22 (5th)
SO: 1 (T-11th)
W: 19 (1st)
SV%: .907 (T-30th)
GAA: 2.58 (18th)
SO: 5 (1st)
One of these is Rittich, and one of these is MA Fleury who's leading Pacific voting so far...
I think there's a really good case for Rittich to be there this year, and we all know BIG SAVE DAVE is going to be entertaining as hell out there.
Not only that, but he's been a big part of the Flames huge start to the year. The goalie of a top 3 team in the West makes a lot of sense to me.
So what do we think? Could he be an All-Star this year?

Flames will get at most 3 guys . Doubt goalie will be one. Gio and Johnny are guarantees plus one of the other big 5 I would guess

All Star voting is a popularity contest, and a cumulative-reward situation.
Rittich is not going to garner attention on either front.

RN it's Johnny and Neal
But I agree, it would likely be Gio, Johnny and Lindholm/Monahan...
But from a fan-vote and fun-to-be-there perspective... Wouldn't Johnny, Monahan and BSD be a ton of fun to be there?

Who else in the Pacific besides MA would?
The Flames are the top of the Pacific (and still could be come end of January) with a goalie named Big Save Dave. There's potential for fans to get around that being who Pacific brought

John Gibson?
Rittich has been good but if someone on an Oilers board suggested Koskinen people here would be laughing and calling them stupid cousin loving hillbillies, yet they are having nearly identical seasons.

Voting is only done by the fans for the captains I believe.
It will most likely be MA Fleury and Martin Jones

He deserves to be there...but
1) gio
2) Johnny
3) tkachuk
4) Monahan
5) lindholm
6) Rittich
All deserve to be there. And 3 players max. So 50% chance

Gio and Johnny are locks I agree. Flip a coin between the other 3 forwards but my vote would be Tkachuk just because of how hated he is around the league.

I wouldn't enter him into the Vezna conversation, but the All-Star game is just a fun weekend IMO.
Some of the top players, and especially some of the vets would really rather have the time off I'd bet. I really do think of this as "Big Save Dave at the All-Star game" rather than has the Flames goaltending deserved to be on a pedestal".
I supplied his stats as a demonstration that he isn't out of place more than anything else but Kostkinen has better stats in all the listed categories. We see players all over the league picked that won't be in contention for any trophy at the end of the year.

This is a huge problem with this thought.
What a crazy years it's been that your plucky funny goalie would have a hard time getting votes amongst the great options ahead of him

3 on 3 format... Johnny Monny and Gio as a line would be pretty tough to beat.

He won't get the votes. Could see a replacement goalie situation like with Smith last season.
IMO Gio, Johnny minimum. If we get 3 then it's likely Tkachuk, but Lindholm would be cool.

I really hate the all star game so it doesn't really matter that much to me who goes, but the Flames are a team with a variety of options and the NHL needs the representation from every team and with the game being in San Jose look for the Sharks (and other California teams) to be heavily represented at all positions. Having a team that is half a Canadian team really isn't going to sell the game, even if they are the best players.

I like 3 on 3 but it's not somewhere I want to see Rittich. It'd be a nice feather in his cap but not exactly a confidence boost to get lit up

I hope that Rittich does not get chosen for the All-Star game. Last thing he needs is to have many goals go past him in such a circus exhibition

I like keeping Rittich under the radar. I'm sure scouts around the league know about him. But I like like to think opposing fans have no idea who he is, are confused when he shuts the door, then look him up online and gasp at his stats.

Here's who I would select:
F EDM McDavid
F CGY Gaudreau
F EDM Draisaitl
F VAN Petterson
F SJS Couture
F ARI Keller
D CGY Giordano
D SJS Burns
D LAK Doughty
G VGK Fleury*
G ANA Gibson
* = vote leader, mandatory pick
Construction logic.
Must pick:
McDavid: top scorer, EDM's best representative, high profile
Petterson: easily VAN's best player, and you need one
Giordano + Burns: far above all other defensemen, PPG+ vs ~0.65 P/G max
Fleury: fan vote, but makes life easier 'cause you need VGK representation
Gibson: of the goalies with strong SV% Gibson has easily the most minutes, and fills your ANA spot
Next picks:
Gaudreau + Draistaitl: #2 and #3 in scoring, these guys should get in.
That leaves you with 2F and 1D with no representative for LAK or ARI.
You either go Keller + Doughty or Kopitar + Ekman-Larsson. The forward options are really underwhelming here, but one of them makes the team due to Gio + Burns being too good to snub. I went with Keller over Kopitar because he has a slightly more respectable PPG, but it was close. The defensemen aren't that far off, as there's Gio/Burns, then Karlsson (who gets snubbed), then things get pretty clustered and these options are in the cluster.
Last forward:
On merit, it's Tkachuk. But with for the sake of the home fans, I picked Couture. Meier is slightly ahead of Couture in scoring but I think Couture gets it anyways, due to higher profile and tenure.
Snubs:
Tkachuk/Monahan: Due to having a representative from all teams, the max the Flames can send is four. Draisaitl, as EDM's second representative, cuts that to three, so Monahan is already missing out. Tkachuk makes way to home-team favouritism, and thus the 4th and 5th highest scorers in the division miss the team. I just don't see three Flames and one Shark happening, as much as it would be deserved.
Karlsson: A home team snub? Karlsson is scoring more than the ARI/LAK defenseman, but Couture is also better than their forwards. But you could argue that Keller + Kopitar + Karlsson works better than Couture + Keller + Doughty. That's also a viable construction.
Koskinen: top SV%, and the only guy with better GAA has half his minutes, but not enough minutes/popularity to go, and EDM's already got two forwards going. (Rittich is just below Koskinen, but comes from a team that's already got forwards going. He's not a top two goalie in the division, so he's not actually a snub.)

I think Edmonton's rep should be Koskinen. Partly because he's as big a reason for any of their wins as McDavid and partly because I'd love to see McDavid snubbed and the gnashing of teeth up north.
