Flames Dec 14 Practice Notes: Backlund and Smith will travel with team on road trip

Kristen Anderson
@KdotAnderson
RW Michael Frolik heading out on the ice this AM with a regular coloured jersey. He’s the first out along with Gillies and Rittich.

Kristen Anderson @KdotAnderson
Hold that thought. Looks like he was just on the ice before everyone else. We will see if he joins the main group.

What a great day! Even if they don't end up in the lineup this weekend.

Frolik won't join main practice group

Kristen Anderson @KdotAnderson
So, no Frolik (who skated before the main group) but getting Backlund back is likely a nice surprise. He's in a normal coloured jersey, signalling a regular return to practice.

Also from Minny, reports are Koivu has joined their practice and looks like he might play tomorrow.

First shift of the game... the fans look up and there is a cage coming down from the rafters right to the middle of the ice.

Tag-Team match:

Backlund+Giordano (Gaudreau as manager)

vs.

Koivu+Dumba (Staal as manager)

The winning team gets to join Connor McDavid for dinner one night!

Kristen Anderson @KdotAnderson
"Wakey-wakey," -- James Neal, just now to Mikael Backlund who was in the wrong position during a drill. Big development to have their top shut-down centre back on the ice ahead of a three-game road trip through the Central Division.

That's huge for this club.

2/3 of their shutdown line has been out...that's going to hurt any team.

Defensively they have been slipping...this should really help assuming they are back soon.

Also gets Bennett off that 2nd line if Peters wants to go that direction.

Which IMO he should as SB just isn't playing well enough to warrant those minutes as he is on a 26 point pace...yet again. On a team that scores goals at a greater pace than every other team in the league but 2.

Peters is triggered

Kristen Anderson @KdotAnderson
Bill Peters stopped a drill midway through the start of practice and is making them skate the length of the ice. He's been dropping some language unsuitable for young children, too.

I am frustrated with Neal's production. But I like him.

I assume its a gentle reminder from Neal for Backlund to keep his head up.

I can't say I have been very impressed with Czarnik so far this season. 1 point and -5 in the last 10 games.

Nice to see. In spite of Neal's lack of production, I think his maturity and experience will be a big factor, especially in the playoffs...something akin to having a playing coach.
