We still couldn't defend ourselves. I think we should spend as little as they'll let us get away with and commiserate with what we can afford and in line with what it takes to outfit our army so it's as competent - and our soldiers are as fairly compensated - as other nations that are our size.
On another note, you hear how Americans recruits are tricked by recruiters with bait-and-switch tactics...does that happen in Canada as well or does the compensation, lifestyle, etc. get accurately laid out so young people know exactly what they're signing up for when they join our military?

I'm not sure, but I doubt it.

No, however Sovereignty means that you still have to actually contribute to your own defense and not completely free load off of your neighbor.
At this point with the General rust out combined with our government sending our men and woman on as many missions as they can with as little financial commitment as possible, our government sucks at any understanding of a modern military.
If the idea is that we should be ok with the States financing North American Defense then we can't expect them to respect our air space or water ways ,
Right now the honestly most effective military spending would be to kill the Canadian Military completely since its hitting the point where it can't be fixed without a massive outlay of funds. Increase our military spending to nato minimum levels and give that money to the States as a defense contractor in charge of North American air sea and land defense. allow any Canadians who want a military life to join one of the arms of the American Military. Give access to the Americans to all of our bases and training lands and call it a day.

I'm not sure how much recruits are tricked in the U.S. as opposed to exploited. For many poor and working-class young men in the U.S., the military and the education and training it provides is the only route out of poverty. Triple the cost of post-secondary education in Canada and you'd see a lot more young people lining up at high school recruitment desks.
And on the subject, IIRC Alberta has the lowest rate of military enrolment in Canada and Nova Scotia has the highest. So in this country it's also a route out of poverty that the comfortably middle-class who have other options don't need to avail themselves of.

That's hilarious in the same summer that Trump is taking a bazooka to US-Canada relations over NAFTA renegotiation. It's irresponsible and cavalier to just assume that we can continue to free load off of the US for national defense in perpetuity. In a world in which the West is losing it's grip on international influence I can only imagine that there might come a time when we will have our own distinct interests that we will need a sizable, well trained and equipped military for.

Dude, I specifically said "historically" in the same sentence as the one you bolded. Meaning "in the past" or "with reference to past events". Obviously that's potentially changing with Trump lol.

Remembrance Day should be a national stat holiday and shouldn't be flipped for other days off.
For me, it should be the holiday with the most meaning of all

Allow America to station troops at all Canadian Forces Bases?
Good bye sovereignty.
