Al Coates was right when he said "It will grow on people".
The Flaming C is now synonymous with Calgary!

The Flaming C passes the good sports logo test...it's simple and memorable enough that a small child can scrible it for you, and you instantly know what it is. Good luck doing that with a lot of new team logos.
It's a great logo, and I hope they're not dumb enough to ever change it.

The Flaming C indicates the team name and the city without saying a word. Can't do better than that.

Huh. I didn't know that Nelson Skalbania owned both the Oilers and the Flames at one point.
Seems like a really greasy guy, but was great for pro hockey in Alberta.

Crazy thought- Every time Edmonton gets mentioned in a thread that has nothing to do with the Oilers it should result in an infraction.
Every time I see them mentioned, which it feels like is every damn thread I click on, I feel like the Dude when he finally snaps on Walter-
"WHAT THE #### DOES ANYTHING HAVE TO DO WITH VIETNAM!!??"

Very true. And he was a key member of the satellite hot stove on CBC - another important source of updates and stories on the happenings in the NHL pre-internet.

Yup - others can correct me if i'm mistaken but i think Skalbania also owned the rights to Wayne Gretzky before he sold them to Pocklington.

The Flames do a lot of things wrong with their jersey, but their logo is beautiful. The red version is my personal favourite, and is among the best in the league if you ask me. I also love the white one. The black is my least favourite but I still think it's awesome.

Boom, totally.
Even though he didn't represent the Flames or the oilers or the province of Alberta, he really did give the canadian western conference their due on an ultra professional and presentable level.
You got the sense that him and Davidson were the meat of the segment and Strachan was the sideshow.
Still one of if not the best hockey journalists in print today.

The story "I heard" was he lost him in a racquetball game.
I guess it was backgammon.
Quote:
"It all started in a private jet between Nelson Skalbania and Peter Pocklington, and it was a backgammon game with pretty high stakes as it turns out," said Larry Gordon, who was the Oilers' general manager in 1978. "Peter won that game and there was a wager made, some money exchanged hands and Wayne Gretzky, Eddie Mio and Peter Driscoll ended up in Edmonton Oilers uniforms.
