Icon33 Habs select Logan Mailloux in the 1st round after he renounces himself from the draft

going to be a story

backstory from the 2021 draft thread:

Logan Mailoux has been placed on multiple team's do not draft list after an incident where he took a picture of a consenting girl performing oral sex on him without her knowledge and shared the picture along with the girl's online profile with his teammates in Sweden.

According the article he could have gone from 15 to 72nd OA according to a random sampling of some nhl team's draft boards.

Also important to note that Mailoux was 17 years old at the time of incident (the girl was 18) and is giving permission for the story to be published.

https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/nhl-dra...rge-in-sweden/

Quote:
The response from several NHL teams has been clear. At minimum, the Arizona Coyotes, Chicago Blackhawks, New York Rangers and Toronto Maple Leafs are believed to be among the teams with no plans to select Mailloux under any circumstance. The list is likely longer than four teams, as six teams did not interview Mailloux at all, which would seemingly indicate their lack of interest in him.

“We’re trying to put a team on the ice people can be proud of and support,” one NHL team front office member said, when asked about Mailloux. “We’ll build a less efficient roster, if need be, to make sure that is the case in our community.”

Mailloux renounces himself from the 2021 draft and asks that no team drafts him in the hopes that he can use the upcoming season to prove his maturity and character for the 2022 draft.

Didn't realize this but apparently Mailloux renounced himself an hour after this story was published:

https://theathletic.com/2716093/2021...tfelt-apology/

Quote:
The woman who was victimized by NHL Draft prospect Logan Mailloux, who had a photo of her performing a sex act taken without her consent and circulated by Mailloux among some teammates, said she hasn’t forgiven Mailloux because she doesn’t believe he has shown remorse for what he did.

“I do not think that Logan has understood the seriousness of his behavior,” said the woman in an email.

Quote:
The woman said she asked that Mailloux send her a sincere apology in written form because she did not want to meet with him in person. She said she received “a text that was no longer than three sentences.”

“All I wanted was a heartfelt apology for his behavior,” the woman wrote to The Athletic.

The woman felt that Mailloux’s subsequent attempts to apologize were done at the behest of team officials and the court. SK Lejon’s hockey director, Lars Westermark, has not responded to calls and text messages when asked for comment about how the club handled the situation (Westermark was also, at the time, the chief of area police).
Quote:
In a Daily Faceoff report, Mailloux was quoted as telling Swedish police investigators that he believed the woman wanted to “ruin his life.” Multiple sources told The Athletic that in interviews with some NHL teams, Mailloux has portrayed the woman as vindictive.

“Logan says that I want to ruin his career. I have never said that. All I have wanted is to get justice for the actions he has taken against me,” the woman wrote. “If his actions ruin his career, it’s up to him. It’s not my fault.”

It’ll be easy to see what his character is like.

Refuse to sign with the team that ignored his wishes, wait until re-entry/free agency (not sure what he’d be eligible for).

Simple.

Along with the rumour of their interest in DeAngelo. Not surprising.

Wouldnt surprise me of the whole opting out was a plan by the Habs to guarantee they get him.

Is this even a good pick at 31 regardless of the off-ice issues? I never saw him rated that high before he dropped from the draft rankings.

The same franchise that tried to acquire DeAngelo? Not surprising.

Montreal has to know that they have to address this head on. Just weird.

It’s a good pick. Kid was 17... he hopefully has learned his lesson.

I mean, if you're going to do this, okay - but why not wait until the 7th round? Both are stupid moves.

But at least you wouldn't have to renounce a 1st round selection in a week.

Friedman was so flabbergasted that he said they drafted him "31th".

Not a lesson that should need to be learned.
I'm just glad the Flames aren't the team that did this. It's one of the things that would make it tough to continue to support them.

Agreed. It shouldn’t need to be learned. But not everyone is that smart at that age.

Not a chance he’d last to round 7. If Montreal hadn’t taken him he wouldn’t have lasted through round 3.

It was literally more shocking than when they read Chinakhov

You could tell the analysts were very not prepared to talk about the situation

Most shocking first round selection ever? They even took him AHEAD of where he was ranked
