Sportsnet: How Team Canada Might Have Looked
Sportsnet does an article on how Team Canada may have looked if they did send NHL Players.
Dougie and Gio make the team as the 3rd pairing.
Monahan and Smith do not make their respective positions.

Feel a bit bad for the Americans. If there ever was a year for Team USA to win gold this could have been it. They almost match Canada's depth.
Johnny Gaudreau — Auston Matthews — Patrick Kane
Max Pacioretty — Jack Eichel — Blake Wheeler
Jason Zucker — Tyler Johnson — Phil Kessel
Brandon Saad — Vincent Trocheck — Tkachuk
Boeser, JT Miller, Kyle Connor, Anders Lee
Zach Werenski — Seth Jones
Ryan Suter — John Carlson
Jaccob Slavin — Charlie McAvoy
Dustin Byfuglien, Cam Fowler
Quick, Gibson, Scneider

Seguin as a spare forward?
That shows the crazy depth there and too bad we won't get to witness a team like that.

To be fair, the only reason he's there is because Jonathan Toews is in the lineup, when he probably shouldn't even be on the team at this point. Of course, it's totally true that he would be on the team, because that's how Hockey Canada does things. Same for PK Subban being an extra.

Lol Morgan Rielly on the second pairing.
Smart move by Johnston, otherwise his inbox would've been filled with hate mail from Leafs fans.

Canada's always a handful, no matter what, but that lineup looks like the best in the history of USA Hockey (at least on paper).
Their D in particular (traditionally a weak point for Team USA) looks like it could go toe to toe with Canada.

Not being able to see Johnny with Matthews is a crime against humanity.

Jah, a Gaudreau - Matthews - Kane line is almost too much to contemplate. Holy smokes.

It's a good team, but almost every position, on every line, they have a guy who is not as good as the corresponding Canadian.

Reilly doesn't make the 2nd pairing, IMO... and I'd take Getzlaf over Giroux

Crosby McDavid and Stamkos all on one team, yikes.
I would prefer to see Huberdeau instead of Stone.

No doubt. But in a one game elimination tournament, this would probably have been Team USA's best chance. Oh well, too bad for them. The next World Cup will be awesome to watch Canada vs. USA.

Are you being serious? That is an All Star calibre NHL defense you have listed, but it still absolutely pales in comparison to what Canada can roll out.

Happy to see Gio and Dougie make that team but I wouldn't have PK Subban as the extra.
Also, Toews should not be on that team. That guy is so overrated.

Maybe in a direct comparison position for position, player for player. Yeah Canada still is superior.
But in a one and done setup like the Olympic tournament, that is the best US lineup I have seen on quite some time.
It is too bad the NHL isn't going to South Korea. But after Sochi where there really wasn't much drama outside the weird Latvia game (I think it was Latvia). I was pretty meh on the tournament. The Canadians were just so dominant, the Gold medal game was a clinic.
My best memories of Olympic Hockey were the dramatics of Salt Lake City and Vancouver. I think this hypothetical US team had the best chance of bringing that back.

Might be my Flames bias, but I'm not enamoured with the second D pairing of Rielly and Pietrangelo. Dougie-Gio might be better there because they can shutdown and contribute offensively.
I think Pietrangelo was injured but also hasn't scored a goal since November?

Agreed on both points, although the path to making best-on-best international competition more exciting for Canadians is unthinkable, because what made that 2002 Olympic win so incredible was the 50-year gold-medal-draught that preceded it, combined with Canada's lacklustre performance in the first few round robin games. I can do without all that.
