What are you talking about both? Connelly is pure trash and a throw in for cap purposes.

That deal stinks for the Flames. They save cap but take on term to vastly downgrade their team

They basically pay about the same cap but spread over two years.

They add a 4th line winger for a top 4D and get a 1st in a year where junior hockey is barely being played.

It is a bad deal and simply laughable that Gordon thought it was a bad deal because both assets are in there. Connelly was on waivers this year. He had negative value and worsens the deal.

maybe retain some salary on Gio and the deal would be fair.
I don't think anyone wants what gio can offer at his salary for another year after this.

No you are overrating Connelly significantly. It would cost at least a 2nd to move him and then the Flames also give the Panthers a player who easily slides into their top 4 while they eat 3.25M for one year they clear $3.5M in another year.

You talk like Gio is a 3rd pairing D or something. Yes he is clearly worse than he was 2 years ago when he was clearly the best player at the position in the entire league.

Gio is still pacing for 36pts over 82 games while playing all situations. I took exception to the “both” comment like you implied Connelly was worth something. The Panthers 1st is currently 27th. So the conclusions I draw here are:

1. You have no idea how good the Panthers are this year?
2. You have no idea how useless Connelly is?
3. You are an Oilers troll

Lots of decent players have been waived this year that wouldn't have been any other time.

22g 46p
19g 33p 69gp (23-40 pace)

He's been bad this year. 2 more years at 3.5 ain't great. FLA also brought in Duclair, Wennberg, Hornqvist, and Tippett...could also be that BC just doesn't fit well anymore and isn't suited to his slot. But, maybe he'd be a bit better than Ritchie or Leivo (of course we don't need to be chasing that mythical RW anymore)

Gio's hasn't been great. 1x6.75 ain't great.

I don't think FLA does the deal because they need an RD. It's hard to gauge Gio's trade value, and waiting another year comes with risk. It boils down to taking back an extra year of AAV to land a 1st. It's a fine proposal.

I just don’t think Connelly is a good player and I think the fall of Gio is vastly overstated. Nobody seems to comment that he went from playing with other legit top pairing Dmen over the past several years in Brodie and Hamilton to plying with a guy who was on our third pair for large portions of the last 2 years.

Make some big trades before the trade deadline. The playoffs are open, GMs will overpay for the hope of winning.
Everybody should be available for the right price.
