I don't love the monarchy, but in all honesty it gives Canada somewhat of an identity. I don't have any British roots and I don't identify with the monarchy whatsoever. But still.
Without it, we are just USA Lite.

I totally agree. I just hate the symbolism of it. It's the embodiment of classism, inappropriate entitlement, and people famous for being famous. As far as I am concerned, being a Windsor is no different than being a Kardashian. Being tied to the Monarchy is also responsible for our archaic and inefficient form of government.
And I know how most people around here feel about Quebec, but regardless, for about 1/3rd of the country (plus probably many aboriginal people), the British monarchy is a constant reminder that they were colonized or conquered.
And it's not like history just disappears if we sever ties with the monarchy. All those historical sites still exist and can draw tourists. Other countries that were part of the British Empire still have preserved historical sites related to that period. But better yet, they focus on promoting their homegrown attractions instead of relying on another country's history.

yeaaaah. I don't think you want to lump those two situations together like that. A French colony losing out to a British colony over control of land is slightly different then what both were doing to the people who lived on that land in the first place.

I'm not lumping them together. I am saying they both have different, but valid reasons for not seeing the Monarchy as a unifying institution.
