Considering that the City conducts Ward boundary reviews in-between elections, it is most certainly something worth sending feedback to the City and is actionable down the road, and therefore okay to talk about in this thread.

I wonder if there's been any serious consideration to adding more Councilors?
It would be a tough sell because they're not cheap, and each one has a support staff too, but it's weird that Calgary has had the same number of City Councilors since 1976. The city's population has nearly tripled since then.
In that same time, both Provincially and Federally, the number of ridings in Calgary has doubled.

There was a discussion about this a few years ago. They decided not to do it, obviously (because we don’t have any more).

Of course, in 1976 councilors didn't have email to deal with their constituents either.

A system of wedge-shaped Ward boundaries emanating from City centre would be an interesting concept. Each councillor having to represent a mix of inner city and suburb constituents would maybe lead to a better compromises between the needs of both.

Nah, it just result in suburbanites overwhelming the inner city in every ward. This idea is basically textbook gerrymandering.

Just a note on Douglasdale in Ward 11 now: the community association covers Douglasdale, DouglasGlen, and Quarry Park. In the past, the ward boundaries split up these communities, so there was one community association with multiple city councillors, which wasn't the most efficient system. Now all three communities are in Ward 11 together, which is probably why it was drawn that way.

This article is all sorts of hilarous.
Bills $95,000 in OT in 5 months, then goes on sick leave for 5 months?
Then Jones:
Quote:
When asked if the total he approved was nearly $95,000, Jones said; "I'm shocked at that dollar figure."
"I don't remember signing for that."
Jones said he would sign off on overtime authorizations as they came in but he doesn't recall signing many of the forms last year.
The overtime bill raises a lot of questions for the former councillor.
"First off, I want to know who signed it," said Jones.
"I can't believe I signed that."
As for what the employee was doing to earn all of that overtime, Jones said he wasn't aware of anything beyond her regular duties.

I wonder if you can request they be removed. I am sure they don’t check the identity of the requester.
At least you haven’t had to walk by a Farkas lawn sign for the last 2 months. Not even sure how that managed to be.

Before Christmas!? Im lucky though as a couple blocks down the street the candidate has a billboard sized sign in what must be his own house's front yard. It even has Christmas lights to light it up at night....

I haven't really kept up with municipal politics but I'm guessing the mayoral race is really between Gondek and Farkas? And I take it CP hate Farkas for some reason? The few bits I've heard of him on QR77, he came across as reasonable.
Just staring to look into the candidates...

“CP” hates Farkas because he constantly grandstands and wastes councils time while being completely ineffective in his role. He is the classic example of talking a big game (taxes, etc) and whining to the media but when it comes to the votes and motions and working with other councillors he doesn’t back it up with...well, anything.

He also purposely spreads misinformation. In one example, for which he was sanctioned by the City Ethics Commissioner, he literally and shamelessly lied to his constituents. He tweeted out a photo to his followers claiming that he was the only member of council to vote for a 5% council pay cut. The only problem? No such vote ever took place. He just makes up whatever he wants and shares it with his supporters, counting on the fact that they believe everything he says at face value without validating the actual facts.

I know that quite a few people have already who they're voting for, for mayor, but hopefully they're not closing the door on this guy: https://www.hallelujah.news/
Before I read his site I was thinking about positions like fluoride in water, the event center and maybe city spending in general. While it had never occurred to me, he's onto to way larger issues!

“Ending deux ex machina”? What does that even mean? Is he tired of movies with plot holes?
