I still don't understand the people who qualify for AZ but would rather wait. Any vaccine is better than no vaccine.

Really not a big incentive.. people who are deferring know they are in the next group so might as well wait a bit longer.

I bet you would have seen different trends if it was open to anyone healthy over 40.

I worry about folks being hesitant on AZ, at least in part because they won't open up 2D (which I am in as somebody in their early 50s) if the authorities feel that they will be stuck with AZ, which can currently only be given to folks 55-65.
Maybe it's because of my age, but I do know of several people who have got AZ, and I am hoping that we can use all the doses we have, even if we have to start giving 2nd doses (which in and of itself might move people to want to get AZ).

I'm finding myself incredibly annoyed that someone can turn their nose up at AZ and still slot ahead of me for a vaccine I'm eligible for, delaying my vaccine for a minor upgrade to theirs. They should go to the back of the line if they turn down AZ.

Note: I'm just ranting.

I am supposed to get my Moderna shot today, I'm very hopefull and also worried that they run out and I won't get it (I know that is low chance but it is a mobile clinic so you never know). Hopefully done in a couple hours.

Is the only reason they won't give AZ under 55 is because they are prioritizing that age group at this point, or is it the blood clot issue? Just wondering if they decide to open it up to +40 once demand dries up?

I believe it's the blood clot issue.

Don't expect any J&J shots here for the next bit. The US is 'pausing' use of the J&J vaccine.

Some Stats...

Of the Top 30 countries by total population, Canada ranks 7th total vaccinations per 100.

Of the G20 countries, Canada ranks 5th in total vaccinations per 100. We should pass Turkey for 4th today.

Of the G20 countries, Canada ranks 3rd in share of people who have received at least 1 dose behind the UK and US.

Canada officially blows past 20% this morning- that's a reasonable milestone!

this was 24 hours to go from 19-20 as they both were crossed with Ontario's morning releases- however of course this 24 hour period included 3 days of BC and 2 days (plus maybe more strays) of Alberta. we aren't really at 1%/day yet

I'm by no means an expert but it seems like the risk is higher for women. I wonder if they could expand the age range for men only to open up the vaccine to a wider group.

Isn't the AZ shot also a female blood clot issue as well?

I'll bet that most of those women are on birth control.

Perhaps I'm wrong and there is good scientific evidence for halting the J&J, but I feel like this is a major blow for vaccines in general. It seems like the anti-vaxers yelling has played a large roll in this "abundance of caution" action, when there are 6 blood clot cases after 6.8M doses have been given. It seems like this is extremely rare and is not really a true safety issue as all vaccines have rare side effects, and the only reason they've stopped now is based on worries around the fear that anti-vaxers can spread to the general public.

Yes, if thats the case it sure makes sense to fast track AZ vaccinations to male law enforcement, firefighters/ EMTs and teachers

But that risk likely isn't the same across different demographics, and given the delay between administration and the clotting, there will likely be more cases from already administered doses. With a new vaccine technology that hasn't really been used widely before, it would be irresponsible to not respond to safety signals during the rollout when we have no idea of what's causing the issues or who is most likely to be affected by it.
