Icon59 Oilers acquire rights to Jayden Grubbe and sign to a 3 year deal for a 2023 5th pick

Felt this needed it's own thread as I didn't see it immediately in E=NG

This screams desperation giving up an asset for a 20 year old F that hasn't played outside of the WHL.

Oilers going to Oil.

I'm wondering if the Rangers weren't even going to sign this guy?

Stats not very impressive for a 20 year old.

Oilers down to only 3 picks in the draft now.

Obligatory thoughts and prayers to the Grubbe’s; also congrats to 5th round puck and his family!

Rangers weren't going to sign him. Seravalli reported back in April.

https://twitter.com/user/status/1645871385607311366

Oilers gave up a 5th round pick to sign him because they probably thought another team would pick him if he were to re-enter the 2023 draft.

Why are we starting threads for non-story Oiler moves? A third rounder going back into the draft - this might finally get them over the top!

There isn't an "Ongoing 'trades that aren't important enough for their own thread' thread" thread.

Because he’s from Calgary. But also to enjoy the Oilers thinking they can take another short cut.

Clearly they’re trying to compress time while their defensively bankrupt studs are in their offensive prime.

I mean they used their own 2021 3rd round pick to select a guy who has 8 assists & is a -28 in 2 seasons in NCAA D1.

Teams that have superstars in their mid 20s should be prepared to have three or fewer picks in every draft, within reason. They should be effing them picks like it’s Mardi Gras.

Whereas teams like Calgary, who don’t have superstars in their mid 20s, should be hoarding picks like a cartoon dragon.

This player is alright, IMO. I would have been ok with the flames looking at him. A 5th is nothing, he's known as a defensive centre. Bigger, RHS, and not real offensive upside but he's not useless with the puck. He's a lot like Ciona except he's a centre.

I don't think it's a bad move.

But according to Oiler fans on Twitter, they signed that big power forward and the best prospect that the Rangers had.

I still remember Grubbe giving the Calgary Royals Parents the double middle finger when getting escorted off the ice in Bantam/Stu. Good times. I tweeted about it and his dad contacted me to please delete it, so I felt bad and did. I thought it was hilarious but he didn't.
