Despite the scam being to my mind about as obvious as a Nigerian Prince pitch I tried hard to emphasize that this was the same as being mugged in an alley and it's important they file reports promptly vs. be ashamed and write it off.
Depending on the scam there can often be a domestic money mule involved. I hope the police take it seriously and investigate.

Same reason you never wanted to be on the "funny email threads" back in the day, or having personal information up on Linked-In.
Good point. I certainly don't make a habit of replying; just felt like having some fun that day. I may pay for it later.

Hello to the Calgary community. I just wanted to share an experience in hopes of saving others the same pain. Also, hopefully to serve as a reminder of the precautions you should take.

I will preface this with the disclaimer that I was not directly involved in this and the information is second hand from my significant other. I also want to say that while people will say the risks for marketplace meetups are obvious, it is still easy to become a victim. It makes you feel helpless to the point you have to resort to writing posts on reddit as an outlet to the anger and frustration.

This evening my SO went to meet someone to sell her used Yellow iPhone 11 for $400. The conversation leading up to the meet seemed totally legitimate and there weren't any initial red flags. The profile seemed legitimate (included a full name and some info about employment. I'm not going to post the profile information as it may be someone's legitimate profile that was hacked and I don't wasn't to dox them or ruin their reputation). They asked the right questions in terms of the specs of the device and asked if she would sell the charger with it etc. They offered to pay extra for delivery ($15) which my SO agreed to and the meet was set for 275 Riverglen Drive SE (Holy Angles k-6 school). However, this was possibly the first red flag. I'm all for public meets but a neighborhood elementary school at 9:30 PM is a little suspicious. However, the meet was set. My SO, being smaller, is always aware of the risks posed to her. For her protection, she made a family member aware of her location and kept them on speakerphone during the transaction as no one was able to go with her. My SO arrived and shortly after 2 black males arrived on foot. They were no older than 20 years old with one being a few years older than the other. Both were under 6 feet tall with skinny builds. They wore darker clothing. This was the second red flag as the description varied slightly from the profile. They were both slightly younger than what she could tell by the profile photo. However the deal continued. They continued to ask questions about the condition of the device and eventually asked if they could physically see the device, a fair request.

Once they had it in hand, they bolted. There was nothing my SO could have done other than yell at them and text them on messenger to get the last word in. Immediately after reading her text, the profile was removed from facebook. She was extremely rattled by the situation. She called the police and reported the incident (Case# 23195771), however there is likely little that the police will be able to do. I just hope with the description, location, and situation, someone else can avoid dealing with these degenerates or this pain. I'm thankful that she is safe and not physically hurt but it easily could have gone another way.

I assume this is the followup to this story- Copied from CPS Facebook site

Police arrest two suspects in series of online marketplace thefts

We have arrested one youth and one man who are believed to be responsible for a series of robberies and thefts that occurred during buy-and-sell transactions for electronics advertised for sale online.

Between Sunday, April 23, 2023, and Monday, May 29, 2023, 12 robberies and thefts occurred across the city after multiple sellers posted iPhones for sale online. It is believed multiple suspects were posing as the same prospective buyer, using the same Facebook profile with the name “Chris Luma.”

After multiple reports containing similar descriptions of a getaway vehicle used after the robberies and thefts occurred, police were able to determine two suspects who were believed to be involved in the incidents.

On Monday, May 29, 2023, a search warrant was executed in the 100 block of Cedardale Road S.W. which resulted in the seizure of stolen electronics, stolen license plates and the arrest of one of the suspects.

As a result, Deng AMAG, 18, has been charged with one count of robbery, one count of theft under $5,000, one count of trafficking stolen property under $5,000 and multiple breaches of court orders. He is scheduled to next appear in court on Friday, June 9, 2023.

On the same day, another search warrant was executed in the 4400 block of Richardson Way S.W. that resulted in the arrest of a second suspect, a 15-year-old boy, who cannot be named under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. He is charged with one count of robbery and four counts of theft under $5,000.

I'm surprised Facebook/Meta and Kijiji haven't set up official exchange spaces/locations in local towns & cities, or that people haven't begun unofficial places for that as a business. Maybe that exists somewhere.

I have heard of Police Stations having exchange spaces in their parking lots which I think is a pretty good idea.

I mean...how much of their parking lots do Police Stations even use? And you'd have to be criminally insane to commit a crime in Police Station parking lot.

Liability would be my guess as to why not.
