LOL Fotze, you know my mom is Chinese but that would be hilarious to feed her the very best in western-chinese cuisine. Growing up here, I would go to Chinese restaurants and ask for grilled cheeses and fish & chips to annoy my parents lol. The best place for that was the circular Hi-Ho restaurant in Banff Trail by the rape/murder motel.

Do food halls count as local restaurants?

Avenda Food Market is underrated in my opinion.

Was there for lunch today. There is a place in there called Expat Asia which has the best Chinese roasted pork in the city.

The celiacs/Gluten Free members on the forum probably all know, but all the restaurants in the food hall have to have a selection of foods that are gluten free, so there is something for I'd imagine most people down at Avenida.

Smugglers may have changed just about everything else, but they kept the chairs!

"Much about the restaurant changed but the owner knew the famous prime rib must stay on the menu at Smugglers Inn"

Uh, no ####. Why else would anyone go there?

What type of restaurant? What price level?

Are you looking for your modern/small plates/sharing or more traditional.

10 Foot Henry does a good job most can be made gluten free and is my generic recommendation for a good restaurant in Calgary for anyone really.

Anything goes I'm sure. They're coming up from Nashville.

Kama isn’t labeled but when I emailed there a year ago they gave me a very good list that was about 75% of the menu. Neat restaurant from the guy who used to have the workshop

Madi’s in 9 Ave is more pub type food Nachos they are famous for well labeled menu

Blue Star Diner in Bridgeland for brunch. They have a fried chicken and waffles that’s amazing.

Fonda Fora for Mexican, really any of the taco places are good for GF

And if you don’t mind chains Local does is really good job of labeling and has separate deep fryers and is good food. A good choice if you want a good generic meal where everyone will find something.

In general if it’s not labeled on the menu and you email them most places will get back to you quite quickly if they are competent at GF. Most places are pretty good at having more options than an gf bun for a burger. Also ask if they have a dedicated deep fryer because if they don’t celiacs can be contaminated from it.

I'm lukewarm on Fonda Fora. The first time I went there, it was awesome! I was with a couple other guys and we had a fantastic meal. Thinking I was onto something, I took my wife there, and it was extremely disappointing. I'm not in a rush to go back, but I'm also not sure what to think now!

No salad bar, no famous soup, no 70s vibe (except for the chairs) = no customer visit.

Benny's Breakfast Bar (if you want breakfast, they're only open 7-3) - Most of their menu is already gluten friendly or can be made gluten friendly

White Elephant Thai Food - The menu states which foods are gluten friendly

Van Son Vietnamese Cuisine - Gluten friendly options available for quite a few things if I remember correctly

Bolero - All of their meats are gluten friendly and the salad/soup bar are all labelled

Wouldn’t a celiac want gluten hostile, not friendly?

They have changed their menu a couple times; but i would agree, its been hit or miss a bit. I still take the risk as the hits can be awesome.

Also, try Milpa. New place across from Nat on 17. Really good mexican dishes, with a focus on fish/seafood plates. Order the coconut ceviche
