This is like if the city's loan program for solar panels required homeowners to repay only 40% of the total install cost. But of course homeowners get to keep 100% of the electricity generated. Oh, and whenever the solar panels are no longer useful, the city will bear the cost of removing them. Sweet!

Just looking for a primer on the paramount importance of distinguishing OPEX vs CAPEX.

I can only assume that the Flames didn't have any interest in discussing things with the city, so they had to sweeten the pot continually until they could get them back to the table.

Stephen Carter @carter_AB

Councillor Sharp has created this mess as chair of the committee.

And now we are watching her, in real time, walk back her own deal.

Worst deal in Calgary history.

Perhaps the worst arena deal ever, anywhere.

Romy @RomyYYC

Given Calgary arena news this morning, just want to remind everyone that this arena deal is the biggest indoor arena subsidy, ever.

We like to be mavericks, but that's not a record we want to break. #yyccc

@RomyYYC
Neil deMause has been tracking professional sports arena/stadium deals for the last 25 years, so for Calgary Flames arena to be dubbed the "largest arena subsidy ever getting initial approval" is pretty damning.

I bet we could get an NFL team if we capitulate to corporate interests even harder!

Heck, scrap the schooling budget and aim for the NBA too!

I expected this from the UCP, but how did the entire city council agree to push this through? Did they only get minimal info? Was the vote on a small part of the deal, without any reference to the actual entire thing?

I'm so glad that I won't have to pay into this corporate welfare. There's something really egregious and disgusting about giving this kind of welfare to billionaires. I'm sure there's a word for this level of greasiness but I just can't find it

You'll be paying for it, no worries. You see, Alberta pays transfer money directly from our pockets into the Nova Scotia money bin, and our pockets will be lighter which means your money bin is going to be less overflowing, so your taxes will have to go up. Facts.

Totally agree the deal is bad. Just not as bad as the Farkas tweet or Herald article paint it as.

They can spin all they want but this is an extremely bad look after greenlighting the arena deal.

Apparently they got scared by the proposal of R-CG everywhere.

So we're keeping the same number of Councilors (14) as there were in 1976 when when the population was 1/3 what it is now. Good call? Bad call? Do we need more? Or just redistribute the ward boundaries as necessary.

14 seems about right to me as a number, that's about one councilor per 100 000 people. But that also puts it well below the numbers we have for provincial and federal ridings.

Somewhat serious question. If we cut that number to like 5, would see any difference as citizens?

It would if one of the 5 was Sean Chu.
