Some of the communities are still worth it. For me that would be ones like the #yycbike crew, sharing winter ride reports, aviation geek twitter, and breaking news it still can't be beat.

That’s why I use it. My Twitter account is large and those I follow keep me abreast of the news I want every single day. It’s my news feed.

I suppose there’s that, but there are other ways to get news that aren’t a hellscape to behold.

Spoutible is having great uptake. It's probably the best of the alternatives and growing quickly.

Elon spends another 10 billion to buy Spoutible because he doesn't want to share the spot light.
All of it collapses, and people go back to using facebook and myspace.

Wasn't Mastodon being touted as an alternative as well? It was being backed by former Twitter folks.

It was but I didn't think it would ever be an actual replacement for Twitter due to its distributed nature.

Right but if Mastodon is all federated, and all the server instances can communicate with each other, wouldn't it still be a fair alternative? It does add the whole level of complexity for the average user with the home/local/federated posts/timelines being separate.

It's great that options like Mastadon exist for certian people, but to reach a critical mass (or even be considered a half-capable alternative), the bolded part above pretty much can't exist.

I think it's a fair alternative for focused groups of users, but for the general public who just want to go somewhere and yell at the world (or watch everyone yell at the world) even that level of complexity is too much.
Though I guess you could argue the Mastadon model would be better for everyone.

Nailed it. Twitter got huge quickly, largely because it was so easy for any airhead to get an account set up and start shouting 140 character descriptions of what they had for lunch that day into the virtual sky.
Mastodon has a layer of complexity that is a put-off for anyone that isn't seriously motivated to get started with the platform.
Logging into Twitter means going to twitter.com and entering your credentials. Boom, done, you're now free to spew nonsense into the Twittersphere.
Logging into Mastodon means first remembering what f#$%ing server you signed up on. There's no central login page, you can't just go to mastodon.social if you didn't sign up on that server. You have to go to thecanadian.social or techhub.social or furries.club (if you're Locke) and sign in there. And good luck if you forget which one you signed up on, because I sure as hell can't remember which one I used, though I swore it was thecanadian.social and no dice.

The trouble with every twitter alternative is that in order to attract an audience, they have to offer something uniquely different. To pull in any audience at all you have to create something very niche, that ultimately has no hope of becoming the new mainstream.
If by some miracle someone actually created a viable alternative, as long as it takes the form of a company with shareholders, it's just going to inherit every problem the last two incarnations of twitter had and just end up being a platform for deranged billionaires to promote themselves, their ideologies and their products to the world at large.

I'm not, I'm just saying that if you wanna find Locke on Mastodon, now you know where.

Also I know there's a lot of political buffs on this site, I'd imagine there's a lot of members here who mostly follow political accounts & topics on Twitter as well. I can only imagine the cesspool of a timeline that would look like.
I'd recommend unfollowing most of those (outside of essential ones, and definitely skip the replies on those tweets) and mostly stick to general interest and sports accounts. That's what I'm doing and it's been decent. Yeah I know, that shouldn't be the case where you even have to do that...but sadly it is.
