Default µTorrent installs cryptocurrency miner in latest update?

Just in case there are any µTorrent users.

http://www.engadget.com/2015/03/06/u...-bitcoin-miner

Quote:
If you recently installed or updated uTorrent on your PC, you may have have picked up an unwanted passenger: a Bitcoin miner called Epic Scale. That piece of code comes attached at the hip with the latest uTorrent build (version 3.4.2) and uses your computer as part of a Bitcoin farm to generate revenue for someone other than you. Users first reported the situation on uTorrent's forums, and it was quickly confirmed by a senior support manager. He said that the app "cannot be installed without permission," but one user pointed out that there was "never a warning about it," even though he opted out of other bundled software.
µTorrent used to be the one to switch to to avoid bloat and junk...

EDIT: Any good alternatives for Windows?

Don't know if it's too complex for some users, but is rTorrent still relevant? Are some games still rolling out updates via torrents?

I use the torrent app installed on my NAS. I do have uTorrent installed on one PC but it's coming off today. Thanks for heads up.

I've used transmission before and am seriously considering switching to it for my NAS and main computer. It's lightweight and free of other stuff.

Did they bundle this with their auto updates or just new installer installations?

Yes, qBitTorrent has more or less taken the crown from µTorrent. Unfortunately it seems µTorrent went the way of Azureus by becoming more bloated and less useful over time.

Deluge is also very good. With all the plugins available it's a lot more powerful than most torrent clients

I've been using tixati for a few months as a nice lightweight torrent client and really like it.

Ah oops. This is the one I was thinking of, not rTorrent.

I actually run it in conjunction with qbittorrent. I have the Deluge daemon running in the background handling my RSS feed downloads, with plugins to check the feeds automatically every 30 minutes, download anything new, automatically remove the torrents after set amount of time when they're finished downloading, which then executes a script that automatically renames and moves my TV show downloads into their proper folders and updates my Plex library. qbit is used for anything else that I manually download

I like Tixati as well, good feature set, but I discovered some of the private trackers I use won't accept it as a client (security issues?).

Also Deluge's biggest drawback is non-compliance with magnet links. Is there a plugin for that?

Transmission is excellent for Mac.
Will have to dig out old phone and uninstall µTorrent and try the windows port of transmission or one of these others mentioned.
Since streaming, I almost never download anymore

I know this kind of is a little off topic, but there are places that you can safely download torrent still? Thought most of the sites were taken down...

Clearly out of the loop on the scene.

Thanks. I was starting to wonder if something was up.

On that note, I honestly don't remember getting any requests about a miner...it's really sketchy that they can even do that.

I use BitTornado. It works pretty well, despite its ugly UI.
