But Johnny didn't score because he was a nervous wreck much like the rest of the team sans Smith. I've given up trying to understand why.

Good, the more embarrassed they are for choking then hopefully the more motivation they have to not repeat it next season.

Yeah but that's way more concerning to me than if the Av's had gone on to dominate more opponents.

This series is annoying. Anything can still happen but San Jose is playing Colorado so much better. I am going to be really disappointed if the Flames don't make a few key changes.

No kidding. I feel the same way. Seeing the Sharks take it to the Avs seemingly fairly easily makes me realize that big changes are needed. We played scared and on our heels the entire series.

Avs looked like world beaters playing us and embarrassed us completely. Still bitter as hell.

100%. It has been quite obvious that reffing is different in the playoffs and small guys like Gaudreau do not get the calls they normally do in the regular season hence making them useless.
The Flames need speed but they also need some bigger skilled players who actually utilize their size. Can't really say the Flames have a single guy like that. It's a small team and not even very fast to compensate which makes it worse.

flames made scrubs like johnson, zadorov, and cole look like norris winners. meanwhile, first line would get pinned in their own zone every shift by the likes of compher and jost.
sharks making it look easy so far, exposing the avalanche for the fringe playoff team that they are. if it keeps going like this i don't know how anyone could think the flames don't need serious improvements

Flames would make a good basketball team, all skill no contact allowed.

Game 2 and Elliott Friedman is already speculating that the Avs are really going to have to pick their spots with Girard and Makar... hinting they won't play much.
So wait? Makar isnt a norris dman that dominated the entire Flames roster?!?

Meh, this isn't a huge surprise. Colorado can play better than this but there's no question right now that they are being systematically outcoached. I think the reason the Flames were so inept against them wasn't because they needed more plugs like Compher and Kerfoot and Jost and the like, or that they needed more 200 lbers... it was mainly that Peters was an outright, unmitigated disaster of a coach in his first playoffs.
That the Sharks have totally dismantled the Avs attack early in the series in total team fashion is a major indictment on Peters. Like I said post-series, much of what Peters did well in the regular season was negated by how bad he was in the playoffs. If they make it again next year, he has as much to prove (if not more) as anyone on the roster.

Gotta love Timo Meier. Pretends to throw a reverse hit then collapses into the boards. Refs should know better.

I also thought Makar was pretty shaky against the Flames... he was just never really placed in any sort of pressure situation. I think it was and is beyond idiotic for Avs management to be playing him this playoffs, especially considering expansion.
And FWIW my buddy from UMass who followed the college playoffs closely said Makar wasn't anything special in the tournament either.
