It's funny how hockey is generally the least political of the four major North American team sports, except when it comes to Russia.

Wouldn't surprise me if they've threatened his family. He's probably rattled considering the mob that runs Russia will kill you for having a difference in opinion.

This is a really scary situation for Panarin. Guy has been consistently outspoken on Putin and endorsed the opposition last month.
Word is he's taking a leave of absence because he's worried about the safety of his family in Russia and wants to get them out.
Of course, if the hit piece somehow turns out to be true, that changes things drastically. But considering the loose cannon making the accusations and the timing of it, it seems like a total hit piece.
Also, absolutely love the Rangers being completely clear that they're in full support of Panarin. Hoping for the best for Panarin and his family.
Crazy situation.

Panarin would have been playing in the KHL at the time with either Chekhov Vityaz or Kazan Ak-Bars. You would think that this may have come out then if true. He also would have been 19 or 20 years old.
Scary world.

When Vladimir Putin only shoots you in the foot, you count your blessings.

Should have signed for the Flames. At least then he'd have been in Canada and one more step removed from Uncle Vlad's clutches.
Mistakes were made and opportunities missed.

True or not. This was a chit they saved on Panarin. Say it is true, they knew about it but so long as he played nice they would take care of it for him. Since he's not being nice it's been released. Yeah, I'd be leaving too and getting my family put of there asap.

A bit of Flames flavour to this story, as Andrei Nazarov who was Panarin's coach in the KHL was the one who reported this to media.

Can imagine some awkward moments when Panarin and Ovechkin run into one another at all-star games and Team Russia camps.

I doubt it'll be an issue... Honestly I think players are generally used to sharing a locker room with people they don't agree with politically. Plenty of MAGAs in the NHL who are less outspoken than DeAngelo.

He wanted to have TJ Galiardi arrested if he ever goes to Russia again, because TJ talked about how bad the conditions were when he was playing in the KHL. Nazarov sounds insane.

Guys that beat up 18yr old girls don't do it once and then live a squeaky clean life for years after. Unbelievably false accusation from a really sh*tty regime.

One of the weirdest parts of this is the focus on "18-year-old girl"
Panarin would have been 19 at the time. Who cares if the girl was 18?
It's almost like "adult man beats up similarly aged adult woman" doesn't have any shock value in Russia, so they had to clarify her age to make people think it was somehow slightly worse? Is a guy beating up a woman not bad enough?
At that point why not go all the way and make her underage in the story? Russia is weird.

Ya, if so you’d expect to see listings like Panarin-Kassian, Panarin-Kesler, and Panarin-Bieksa on hockeyfights.com
