Missing out on trading Valimaki for a couple months of Stone is not a loss. He wasn't going to sign here.

So you’d rather have 20 games of Stone and MAYBE a playoff round win instead of an LD with top pairing potential, who also can give us more years of making it past round 1 (and then some)? Stone would’ve been a fantastic add, but I don’t think he was the difference of pushing us past the red hot Avs.
Stone was never going to sign here. And if he did, then one of our core members are on a different team.

You state that we were "so close". What is this based on?

Based on a very small number of games after the player had a serious injury and extended time off?
I'll say this. Valimaki is a future top pairing dman for the Flames.

^^ TBF didn't Maloney say they went to bed the night before Stone was dealt to Vegas "thinking they had a deal"

I think so. I think the deal changes when Vegas called Ottawa and offered Brandstrom. Which then had Ottawa upping the bid from Calgary.

Stone signed for $9.5 for 8 years (to age 34) in Vegas. There is no personal state income tax in NV and the federal tax is 37% assuming no loopholes or shelters. The federal and provincial taxes here are 10% higher. He loses about a million bucks in very round numbers by signing the same contract here. So you'd have to pay him $1.5 or something like that to make up for the difference. And even then you'd have to convince him Calgary's better than Vegas to play in, or else pay even more to change his mind.

Sorry, but that is ridiculous - you can't know that.
Valimaki may be a top pairing defenseman one day. And he may not.
At a minimum though, he is going to be a Flame for many years. And he is cost controlled for the first several years. So there is lots of value there.

lol sadly Monahan will not be the centerpiece. Lindholm getting scratched would raise my eyebrows.
My guess is lingering injury for Eichel. Nice and boring

Yep. Lower body injury. He went out to warm up but decided it was too bad to play.

Did Andersson light the world on fire in his first 50 NHL games?
Did Gio?
Comments like this piss me off to no end.
They also make me realize how there are some on this forum that have no clue.
If you were actually paying attention you would see so many positive signs in Valimaki’s game that make one think he might end up being the most talented dmen we have.
