My guess is they want to show that he's not hurt, that he's got the competitive fire AND that the organization is treating him carefully and looking out for him.
The media gets their hype package delivered a few weeks ago with the main talking points, from the Oilers. I'm sure the 1st bullet points have to deal with how to frame the McDavid situation.
And the fact that it's pointed out it's the organization, not just the coach, making the call, is more telling.
Surprised at Lucic and Rieder. Though Rinaldo for sure tonight.
Reider WANTS that oiler game so bad.
With a fresh contract in hand, he will have money on the board for the boys tonight
I tend to agree with this. Czarnik has scored some goals this preseason but there's probably nothing less important than pre season scoring statistics. If you really want to run with Reider for a while, why not use Quine as your 13th forward and save a little cabbage.
I could be dead wrong but I believe Czarnik would clear waivers. This isn't Paul Byron who actually played well whenever he was on the ice. Czarnik will turn 27 this season and is still essentially a project.
if czar was claimed i dont think the organization wold shed a tear.

No TV for even one preseason game this year? Lame Sportsnet, lame.
Sportsnet gets sub 100k for a lot of regular season Flames games. I'd be willing to bet a pre-season games amounts to a "smattering" in TV viewer terms.
A couple hundred fans discussing pre-season on a hardcore Flames message board may make it feel like there's lots of people wanting these games, but I bet it's not many in the real world.

I don’t care. I pay them 12 months a year. Produce watchable content.

I second this. Hockey is pretty much the only reason I have satellite at all. Sn gets my money 12 months a year and definitely broadcasts a lot of stuff that would draw fewer viewers than tonights game.
I am now asking myself why I don't suspend my satellite for 6 months of the year.

Regionally? Maybe. And these are regional broadcasts.
But nationally showing one thing, almost regardless of what it is, will garner far more eyeballs than a Flames game in Alberta.
Also, what you pay for cable/satellite is not where SN would make their money anyhow. They make their big money on advertising...and the more people watching whatever it is, the more they can charge their clients.
I mean I wish every game was on too and if they made money doing so, they would. But it doesnt, so they dont.
Its just business.
