Calgary at Vegas

With just 14 games remaining and five points out of the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference, the Calgary Flames find themselves in a must-win situation Thursday in Las Vegas when they face one of the hottest teams in the league in the Pacific Division-leading Golden Knights.

Golden Knights bring winning streak into home matchup against the Flames

BOTTOM LINE: The Vegas Golden Knights play the Calgary Flames with a four win streak intact.

Vegas has a 42-20-6 record overall and an 8-7-2 record in Pacific Division play. The Golden Knights have a 17-8-3 record in games decided by one goal.

Calgary has a 30-24-13 record overall and a 9-4-3 record in Pacific Division play. The Flames have given up 201 goals while scoring 204 for a +3 scoring differential.

Backlund as great as he's ever been – and maybe better

The question is whether this is the best Backlund’s ever played.

In 14 seasons with the Flames — 15 if you count a one-game cameo in 2008-09 — there have been lots of times when Backlund has come up big for the Flames.

This year, though, he seems to have taken his game to another level. It hasn’t gone unnoticed in the Flames’ locker room.

“Backs is our leader, he’s been really good this year,” said Flames defenceman Rasmus Andersson after Sunday night’s 5-1 win over the Ottawa Senators. “He served up (assists) to me and (Elias Lindholm) on a silver platter, so happy for him that he’s having such a good year.

They still haven’t won in Vegas and I don’t expect that to change tonight

That's a beat up Vegas lineup overall, but still good enough to keep winning games. How is Chandler Stephenson their leading point getter? Quick has been pretty good so far, looks a little rejuvenated.

Flip a coin for which version of the Flames shows up tonight. Since they lost the last one, they're due for a good performance. But it is a game in Vegas sooooo......

I just don't see playoffs in this team's future this year, and that's fine. I'd be okay with a lot of losses down the stretch. Time to get a quality asset through the draft.

The Flames haven’t looked like they’re enjoying hockey all year. They’ve generally been workmanlike, but they haven’t showed enthusiasm. If they drop a few over the next 4 tough games, I could see some truly awful efforts as this veteran lineup plays out the stretch. Could be good for the draft picks.

When we were thinking they needed to go something like 15-5 I'm pretty sure a game in Vegas would have been one of the five losses.

So win tonight, then it's three points out of four when I likely expected two.

Mild hope back on!

I've been to 3 games in Vegas and we lost all of them. Tonight will be 4. Let's see if the streak continues because out of the dozen games I've been to the last two years I haven't seen a single win - playoffs included. Almost like I'm bad luck haha.

We could really move from 15th to 10th and a small shot at Bedard

It would be a miracle to make the playoffs requiring a total collapse by BOTH the Jets and the Preds

And it would be a waste of 8 days anyway

Win-win game for me. If we lose, it was expected, and what we should be doing for the sake of getting a better pick in a deep draft.

If we grab a win, it negates the embarrassing loss we just had with the Coyotes and technically up a point if you expected to go 1-1.

I don't think we have what it takes to make the playoffs, but our first win in Vegas' barn could spark up the momentum-meter.

Did you count on losses to the Ducks and Cayottes?

If this season does indeed go south, at the very least it would be nice to get the first win in Vegas.

Here's hoping.

Flames and Bruins win, and we're 3 points out of a playoff spot with 13 left to go. Would be nice if the Blackhawks, Stars, and Sharks pulled off wins, too, just to muddy up the waters a little bit.

The Cayottes for sure. Bastards.

Nope ... but didn't see back to back wins in Dallas and Minny either.

Coming on this trip they could lose 4 games in my mind. They gave up a half game in Arizona and I was expecting one of those losses to be in Vegas.

So a win tonight and it's a point better in these two games and back to my improbable rooting for a playoff spot.

What they really need is an adjustment to the goal (three game skid for both Winnipeg and Nashville)
