Default Could Jake DeBrusk be the next Sam Bennett?

Maybe even for the Flames?

No he can't be. Mostly because he's a winger not a center. Also debrusk already broke out, so its more of a reclamation project than untapped potential.

I dunno, Bennett arguably broke out his first year, right? Bennett is as much of a reclamation project as Debrusk I think. I wouldn't mind buying low on him if it could be done.

Unless the Flames are planning on losing 2 of the 3 LW already slotted in our top 6, DeBrusk is a poor trade target. Does he replace anybody in the top 4 winger slots right now?

Hell, does he even replace any of the plugs in the two available winger slots in the bottom part of the line up?

Maybe he takes out Richardson. He isn't taking out looch or Dube. Unless you're moving Dube for him. And then the cap hit doesn't work.

LW depth is too deep in this organization for the Flames to be looking at DeBrusk.

By “next Sam Bennett” do you mean a streaky guy who tops out at 40 points and takes bad offensive zone penalties?

I mean, I know he had a James Neal start to the season with a bunch of points in Oct, but he’s been same old Sam Bennett since despite top line icetime. 6 points in his last 16 games?

So a pretty low bar IMO to compare with a guy who flirted with 30 pre-pandemic.

Preparing us for something??

Hopefully not… nothing against DeBrusk but we are left wing heavy and already have our fair share of RFA/UFA talent on the left side that needs to be prioritized… I think it would be a foolish trade to make short of it being a Dube for DeBrusk one for one… and even then I like Dube more because he has more development road left and is locked up to a friendly contract beyond this year.

I don’t see the fit at all.

That's all I have to say.

I think you always have to look at buy low possibilities such as Debrusk. Though if the Flames were to go after a "buy low" guy I would still prefer Kravstov.
Insert "why not both" gif here.

Let's offer Boston Heineman and Florida's 2nd in the 2022 draft.

Love what Florida has done. Florida has done a masterful job finding gems, targeting skilled players who have underperformed on other teams. The key is having the right coach who understands these types of players. Darryl Sutter could be what Debrusk needs.

Don't think we can acquire him. I think DeBrusk has the talent to turn it around, but he is a very hot and cold player. I also doubt the Flames are acquiring him based on his cap hit, even at 50%. Gaudreau/Tkachuk, Mangiapane/Coleman (on the second line), Lucic/Dube are all playing the 3 line wings. Unless DeBrusk can play RW and be versatile up and down the lineup, then maybe. But, I doubt it.

We need more of a right handed RW that has more consistency in scoring, not one that is going to whine if things don't go his way. Imagine Sutter benching this guy, will he get his mom to make a twitter post yet again about her son? We don't need this kind of distraction in the locker room.

Pretty sly, Steve. Put Sam Bennett in the title and let the clicks rain down.

I hope you enjoyed his spurt. He’ll always tantalize and always end up dissapointing. Remember that 4 goal game? Or that brief playoff run?

Good thing the article was written now, and a shame it wasn’t while he was still a ppg player. He won’t get back there.
