One shift stands out to me where the puck went to Hughes point and he tried his spin move on Dube and Dube just gave him a decent shot to his back/ribs. Then the puck came around to him on the boards again and Dube hit him hard again.
Really liked it from Dube because it made him think twice about pinching from then on.

It’s what the league has been doing to Johnny for years now and I feel like it’s contributed to the decline in his game. When Johnny came in, he was like a forward version of Quinn Hughes, just dancing all over the place. Now, that spark or burst is gone. That daily abuse just wears on you.

The Rittich thing was tweeted to Tkachuk and Markstrom. It’s a joke about Rittich being jealous of Tkachuk hugging Markstrom instead of him.
It’s actually pretty funny lol.

I don't doubt he's a team guy and I'm quite comfortable with him as the backup. Still, seeing that was funny.

I don't personally think it's the daily abuse. I think there is a few tricks you have used as a player all your life that has made you successful enough in life to get you to the show and It works the first few years your in but players figure you out quickly. I think that's why more drive to the net and dirty area guys have more consistent careers. They don't have a catalogue of moves they just stand in the dirty areas and battle , no frills and gimmicks.
It seems battle endeared dmen typically have a longer career then flashy forewards as an example. I think Peterson and Hughes are going to come up quickly to a wall like Johnny once the playbook is out unless they put on substantial growth you can just get skates chipping ice in their direction and they will make a rash play. There is a reason size is still valued.

Just what the doctor ordered! If this is the real Markstrom, more please! Great performance by him. What a nice feeling to see a goalie with elite rebound control and vision. His play was much better this game.
Tkachuk back to his old self in front of the net. Didnt' hear much about Nesterov or Valimaki other then the side chatter about them. Good solid game from not only that pairing, but the D as a whole.
Solid win and nice to get Markstrom his first shutout.

That was #23s best game in years. His patience with the puck that ended up off the post was a beautiful piece of finesse.

That was just a solid win. The scoreline was a good reflection of the game.
The Flames' passing game was great to watch. Markstrom inspired lots of confidence in net. The younger additions to the team like Dube, Mangiapanne, and Andersson all looked good, and the play of even fresher faces was also encouraging.
The team is also looking so much better in the no-black uniforms this year. Watching some of the passing play while they're in all red was reminiscent of some old Detroit teams.
This season will be weird. By February 17th the Flames will have played the Canucks 6 times, and that February schedule is intense. After the 5 day break the Flames have coming up, they then play 20 games in the next 37 days. Crazy! Seems like the kind of season where just avoiding injury and staying healthy could be a necessity for success. I'm glad the Flames have the goalie duo they do to face that stretch of the schedule.

That is two games in a row where we have come out of the gate looking very good. Against the Jets we followed up a good start with a lacklustre 40+ minutes, but not tonight. We were solid throughout the whole game.
Too often in the past, we've dug ourselves too many holes with flat starts. Hopefully what we are seeing so far will continue.
Mangianpanne looked really good. I absolutely loved his pass to Dube. There was a lot to like last night.

New plan; keep Monahan and tell him to play like that every game, trade other stuff for PLD, have Monahan +Lindholm+PLD!
Profit.

Way more poised team last night and kept up the pressure on the Canucks. I look at that opening night game, hey we got a point, but it felt typical of a opening night game, especially without a proper pre season.
The Flames held the gas down for most of the game, pinned the Canucks and the Flames showed a lot of confidence in their goalie. If I have an area of concern its discipline, this was the second game in a row giving up a 5-3. I think they need to fix that.
Did like the more motion based power play, would like to see a little more aggression on the penalty kill though.

Dom Luszczyszyn from the Athletic said the Tanev signing was terrible back in October. He based his decision from what he saw on a spreadsheet. This is exactly why you have to watch the actual games to see a players worth.

Rick Ball used to do occasional fill-ins, but he was never the regular Canucks PBP caller.

I confess I didn’t keep track of Canucks’ combos - who was his partner?
