Even if they were to get Lafreniere, they would have 3-year window to make it count before having to get rid of McDavid or Draisaitl due to cap concerns, assuming Lafreniere pans out as predicted.
Honestly, if Edmonton gets another 1st overall, they would be much better off trading the pick to fill out their roster. Would never happen though.

So if the Oilers lose to Chicago, they can’t pick lower than eighth overall, correct?

They could win the draft lottery and get first pick. 12.5% chance at first overall. If not I think best possible pick is 10th overall. Rangers have already lost and had worse record so I think 10th is best case after lottery

No. picks number 3–8 have already been decided. If the Oilers do not win the Draft Lottery, they will be slotted ahead of only Pittsburgh, Carolina and NYI on the basis of points-percentage. The highest they can draft is twelfth.

If they lose to Chicago, they'll either pick first overall (if they win the second lottery) or 13-15th depending on whether Pittsburgh and the Islanders win their play-in series.
If Montreal and Florida both win their play-ins, the Oilers would pick 13th, NYI would pick 14th, and PIT would pick 15th (unless one of the them wins the second lottery).
If Pittsburgh and the Isles both win their play-ins, the Oilers would either pick 1st or 15th.

Yup
They could probably unload Neal (or other bad contracts) and build pretty good depth from Montreal who are desperate for a French superstar.
They will want the first overall pick though of course.

Yamamoto is no scrub, even if he is one of the no goods..
And you should have (Scrub) beside Neals name there

Best case scenario IMO. A 12.5% chance at hilarity and an 87.5% chance at a mediocre pick that we know they’ll fumble badly because they’re the Oilers.

I dunno, he played like a scrub last night. I doubt he repeats this season's numbers away from Draisaitl, and even if not he will be priced out of the roster after one more season. Lol Oilers!

If Yamamoto is no scrub, they won't be able to afford him and will have to replace him with a scrub.

He is arguably the only player on the Oilers playing above his salary, but he tops out as 2nd line player on most teams, but lacks the attributes to effectively play down the line-up when he goes through inevitable droughts.
Seriously, look at the pay structure of this team:
https://www.capfriendly.com/teams/oilers
Yamamoto is is probably they only one I would call a bargain, and only marginally.

The thing with Yamamoto that you'd have to be nervous about if you're an Oiler fan (which you're not) is his on ice shooting percentage.
He and Draisaitl were on quite a heater this season.
They both have talent, and Draisaitl has proven he's a top player, but Yamamoto leading all forwards in the NHL with an on ice shooting percentage of 12.45% seems somewhat unsustainable.
Top ten ...
Yamamoto
Point
Rust
Panarin
Stamkos
Pettersson
Boeser
Kuznetsov
Krieder
Kadri
I'd offer the Oiler and both Canucks may have had outlier seasons (Pettersson being the future exception)

I can't wait to see what happens with Nuge too. Imo he is a good player who gets a huge boost in production because of who he plays with and their pp.
Former first overall pick who was nearly a ppg in regular season and has 7 points in 3 games in series. I could see Holland resigning him this off season as he will definitely be considered a core player. If he gets Skinner money they are going to be a mess for years for cap space. Neal and Kassian eating up almost 10 million a year for 3 and 4 years is awful.
Imo if they did win the first overall pick Nuge should go to help with cap pressure. His return wont be near as good though

You could trade RNH, but he will be on the last year of his contract before becoming a UFA the following season. So how much value can he have as a rental. He really put up points when playing with the big two, but can he drive a line, I don't think he can.

It is exactly how I reacted when I awoke that fateful morning five years ago to the news that the Oilers had won the McLottery. It has been an entertaining five years.

Yeah, the lottery doesnt really worry me. It hasnt helped them so far.
