Knights 3 Flames 2
Knights 3 Flames 2
- Flames pretty listless in loss in Vegas
- middle six seems to be a mess
- Kept in the game by Jacob Markstrom
- Pride points for making it interesting in the third.

No high danger through 40. That certainly matches the eye test.
Backlund-Mangiapane-Coleman is the Flames best second line but unfortunately that leaves nothing for the bottom two lines. As you point out, Dube is lucky to even be in the lineup right now.
Would really love to see us go out and get a forward in advance of the deadline and give Sutter some time to work them in.

I think Dube at centre is the right play right now, even if it's just the fourth line. He's been Sven Baertschi levels of invisible since being moved back to the wing.
Call up the kids.
Pellettier-Backlund-Mangiapane
Phillips-Monahan-Coleman
Lucic-Dube-Lewis

I still have high hopes for Dube but he just can't seem to figure it out. Playing like he has no confidence.

First Line Centre

It’s pretty obvious we need more offence up front.
As stated we need some help in the middle 6.
I don’t think it helps that all our best players for those spots, in Mangiapane, Monahan, Backlund, Coleman and Dube, are all left handed either. Not to mention Pellitier and Zary in Stockton.
I hope we can address this instead of settling for someone like Debrusk.

lol switch out multiple players after 1 one goal loss?
15-5-5 team
Get a win Tuesday and come home with a 3-1 divisional road trip which would be outstanding

Feels like our 3rd line needs a ton of work. Monahan really needed to rebound as a second line centre to push Backlund to the 3rd. With that not happening, or at least as quickly as everyone would hope. Combined with Dube struggles really leaves a void at the 3rd line. Pitlick was always a short term filler there. But the other two struggling has left a hole.
Gaudreau - Lindholm - Tkachuk
Mangiapane - Backlund - Coleman
Lucic - Richardson - Lewis
Finding some combination of Monahan, Dube, Pitlick, Ritchie (if/when he comes back), a callup or a trade add that clicks could push this team in to a scary matchup in the playoffs.

Yeah they need to figure out the want to help ... Monahan or Backlund, they can't do it for both.
Pick one, give them Coleman and Mangiapane and get to work.
But Lucic doesn't have the boots to play in the top six, and Lewis doesn't have the hands to play in the top nine.

Can’t see Phillips ever cracking the roster while Sutter is around. Unless he gains 50 pounds.

I think Pelletier will get a shot this season at some point. Leading scorer on the farm team. I don’t think Zary will. At this point Pelletier is ahead of Zary in terms of development.

2 regulation wins out of 10 games that the Flames played in the West
2-4 in regulation against the West. Only 1 regulation loss in 15 against the East.

The Knights move with seven points of the Flames.

rather than 11 points that a Flames win would have gotten.
What are the chances the Flames get to play Vegas in round 1?

Lewis is probably the odd man out. I think Lucic could credibly play with Monahan (who I thought generated a couple chances last night). They need Dube to get his head right.

I would say pretty good, but I do only see it happening in the event that the Flames do not win the Division. VGK is probably headed for a Divisional playoff spot, so as long as Calgary can plow through the much more forgiving part of their schedule like they have through the first two months of a very difficult schedule, they likely won't draw the Knights.
But I say, "Bring it on." Playoffs are such a different animal from the regular season.

Markstrom v. Lehner? I don’t mind it. But IMO Calgary has a good chance to play a wild card and Vegas is a top 3 team.

The Flames are in a virtual tie for first in their division with Edmonton after 25 games. Edmonton back 3 pts with 2 games in hand. You obviously are thinking the Flames norm is better than what they have been playing and there will not be any regression to a non-elite norm.
Edmonton in the West in regulation: 11 wins 4 losses. Edmonton is mowing down the chasing teams in the west.
Like it or not Edmonton is a major challenge/event with the McDavid / Draisaitl show that the rest of the West have considered elite from the start of the season along with the Avs, VGK , Wild and Stars . These teams were expected to have a good chance to come out of the West and play in the SCF. Not my personal analysis but the betting odds at the start of the season
The Flames were 22 to one odds at the start and have moved to 8.5 to one. Oilers started at 10.5 to one and have moved to just under 7 to 1
The Flames might have won some games where the opposition was not fully prepared to for the game the Flames were playing. That will not happen going forward.

of course anyone that thinks that Edmonton is completely in the Flames rear view mirror is kidding themselves
the Oilers have had a fairly easy schedule though- we can debate who was prepared for who , or other tidbits, but probably one of the 3 easiest by at least one metric
