I think they expected him to be in the top 4, then when Kylington grabbed that spot they were waiting to see if he faltered. Then with Zadorov looking shaky the door was still open. So it’s like they were a bit paralyzed until everyone else settled in, opening the door for Valimaki to get sent down.

He’ll be back up with the first extended injury.

Flames are in California now until the 7th, ending in San Jose. Stockton has 3 games during that period, also ending in San Jose.
Does Valimaki stay with Stockton beyond the 7th?

I think he's staying until one of the D gets injured. It gives the Flames a much bigger cap flexibility closer to the trade deadline, and this is a season they might want to add.

Coincidence or did they just find out he was waiver exempt? Makes no sense to have waited this long.

I honestly think Flames thought he was waiver eligible.

I don't get why that would make a difference. They have Stone who could sub in if needed. Is saving a plane ticket really why they'd send him down and call him up before they leave?

Good. Better for him to be playing in Stockton than eating popcorn in Calgary.

Doubt it, they were out east most of the season. Now seems like a good time with them on the west coast and at home for a while. They might need him quickly.

Well I guess I can stop wishing they'd sit Zads and play Vali now.

From the article cited by Tkachukwagon, it looks like this particular situation has never arisen before. Normally, a player who has finished his ELC is waiver-eligible, but Valimaki played zero games one season and his waiver eligibility was bumped to the following year.

The CBA has one definition of ‘year of professional experience’ for pension purposes, and another for free agency purposes. However, it does not explicitly state what counts as a year of experience for waiver purposes, so the NHL had to make a ruling on which definition to use (and presumably the NHLPA would have had to sign off on it).

Now that that is taken care of, off goes Juuso.

I do imagine the Flames asked for clarification of his waiver status although in reading the article the evidence seemed to point that he was exempt. I wonder who the smart person was that finally figured it out?

I remember first person mentioning it was a CP poster but was pretty much insulted and belittled. Turns out he was right. Can't remember who it was.

Ziggy Lidstrom I think. Already apologized - he was right.

He definitely needs to play, so this is great for him. Hopefully he doesn’t pout, and uses this opportunity to his advantage.

Could also have been that you keep him up while there are lots of games out east, where a call up is trickier. Now they are closer to Stockton, he can be up and down easier?

Getting from Stockton to Calgary is not particularly easy.

You have to either drive to Sacramento and take two flights, or make the longer trip to San Francisco, battle that airport, and get a direct flight to Calgary.

Neither choice is quick.

Asking for Jay.
Have to wonder right? The timing suggests that could be possible.

The way they like to manage the cap as precisely as possible it does make you wonder.

While we're apologizing to people I feel I own Salim Valji (TSN) an apology here.

I've taken him to task for some poor hockey takes but not only did he nail every one of the Flames free agent vet signings in the off season but he was also the first to suggest Valimaki could be and likely would be sent down. He took heat for it on Twitter (not from me there though) but sure enough he was right. Again.

Salim, if you're reading this, I'm sorry I doubted you.
