Default Alexander Ovechkin v. The World

Alexander Ovechkin just became the eighth player in history to score 700 goals, and he looks to be the last player to achieve this astonishing milestone for the foreseeable future. Simply put: Ovechkin is closer to scoring his 800th goal than every active player except for Patrick Marleau is to scoring his 600th. The most incredible part of this is that he looks like he could actually do it.

This brought to my mind a question, which I think would make an interesting poll, and spark a fun discussion:

Who will get there first? Ovechkin to score his 800th goal or any other player to score 600?

As noted, only one other active player has scored more than 500 goals, Patrick Marleau, but he is already 40-years-old, and slowing down fast. Six active players have passed 400 goals—Sidney Crosby (458), Ilya Kovalchuk (442), Eric Staal (434), Steven Stamkos (422), Joe Thornton (415), and Evgeni Malkin (409).
Only Stamkos is under 30, and Kovalchuk, Staal and Thornton are all over 35-years-old.

I have put together a list of players who I believe to be the most likely to score 600 goals in their NHL careers based on current levels of production and age. I have also provided projections for when they could be expected to hit their next big milestone on the basis of their average, pro-rated production between 2017–20. If you have any players to add, or which you think should be removed from the poll, make your case.

Alexander Ovechkin: 100 goals to 800 — 34 yrs, 159 days || 52 G/Avg, eta: 2022
Patrick Marleau: 39 goals to 600 — 40 yrs, 161 days || 20 G/Avg, eta: 2022
Sidney Crosby: 142 goals to 600 — 32 yrs, 200 days || 32 G/Avg, eta: 2025
Steven Stamkos: 178 goals to 600 — 30 yrs, 15 days || 38 G/Avg, eta: 2025
John Tavares: 258 goals to 600 — 29 yrs, 156 days || 40 G/Avg, eta: 2027
Nikita Kucherov: 383 goals to 600 — 26 yrs, 251 days || 38 G/Avg, 2030
David Pasternak: 425 goals to 600 — 23 yrs, 335 days || 45 G/Avg, eta: 2030
Connor McDavid: 440 goals to 600 — 23 yrs, 41 days || 43 G/Avg, eta: 2031
Leon Draisaitl: 440 goals to 600 — 24 yrs, 119 days || 41 G/Avg, eta: 2031
Auston Matthews: 446 goals to 600 — 22 yrs, 159 days || 49 G/Avg, 2030

UPDATE!
I have given up on the initial question posed in this thread because Alexander Ovechkin is crushing it. He is now 55 goals away from 800, and no other active player is anywhere close to 600.

So, this is now the countdown thread as we witness the greatest goal-scorer of all time continue his explosion up the Leaderboard. I will be updating this thread daily.

1 Wayne Gretzky — 894 [1487 GP]
2 Gordie Howe — 801 [1767 GP]
3 Jaromir Jagr — 766 [1733 GP]
4 Alex Ovechkin — 750, *5 Dec: 20G/25GP [1222 GP]

Alexander Ovechkin is the absolute best goal scorer in history but at age 34 he's not superman and I will take bets he doesn't get another 195 goals to beat Gretzky, within 2 years he will hit the eventual wall where 20 goals is considered a great feat.

This is just a nice story

Who is talking about Ovechkin catching Gretzky? I agree that would be a near impossibility, but he is still a really good bet to become the third 800-goal-scorer in history, and will probably finish his career #2.

I think Crosby gets to 500 before Ovechkin gets to 800, but he's the only one

Also, I do think Ovi breaks Gretzky's record eventually

Ovechkin will hit 800 before Crosby or Stamkos get to 600. Durability is huge and that’s where Crosby is a question mark.

I bet he catches Howe for sure but Gretzky? I dunno. It'll be close.

I know I'm rooting for him

I’m a Gretzky fan and hope his record stands forever. I’m an Ovie fan, too, and I think he could do it but I hope not.

So any others to add or remove from the list before I add the poll?

Maybe Neon Leon up north. He needs 440 to get to 600 but is a year older than McDavid. He has been out scoring Conner though.

Man, TSN's editing department has really gone down hill lately. I can't believe I had to fix this for them.

Spoiler!

I think its very possible for Ovechkin to break the goals record.

It all depends on how long he wants to play.

Next year he will be 35. I could easily see him pulling off goal numbers like:

35: 45
36: 40
37: 30
38: 25
39: 20
40: 20

He'd only need 15 after that. Jagr scored 27 at 43. Ovechkin could survive as a PP specialist into his 40's easily.

It all depends on if he wants to keep going. If he commits to playing until he gets the record, I think its very doable.

Also a huge Gretzky fan and I kinda hope he beats it. Great for the sport.

Wow, looks like the Hockey News picked up this idea

https://thehockeynews.com/news/artic...00-goal-scorer

Quote:
In fact, you could argue that Ovechkin has a better chance of beating Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record of 894 goals than anyone has of approaching 700 goals in the next, say, 15 or 20 years.

A better question might be to ask who’s the next player to join the NHL’s 600-goal club. And the short answer might be the same: probably nobody. But it wasn’t so long ago that Gretzky’s record appeared absolutely untouchable, and here’s Ovechkin raising the possibility
Can’t believe they didn’t reference CP

I think he’ll be a better goal scorer then Mcdavid overall.

It would be remarkable if he does do it, and I think he will give it a shot and likely make that the goal in order to keep playing.

When you see how terrible the goalies in the league were for the first half of Gretzky career or more, and the goals he and players got on goalies who’s only move was a awkward kick save, Ovechkin getting within 100 of Gretzky (802 and pass Howe) would be much more of a feat.
