Flames trade deadline AHL transactions
Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
#Flames AHL post-deadline transactions:
-Rittich assigned to AHL then recalled
-Gillies assigned to AHL then recalled
-Mangiapane assigned to AHL
Gillies remains on emergency recall, which means Calgary has used 1 of their 4 post-deadline recalls.
This means players like Glass, Hathaway, Jankowski, Kulak, Bartkowski, etc. cannot be sent down to the AHL for the rest of the season and are not eligible for the AHL playoffs.
Rittich and Gillies can be assigned to the AHL. Rittich, Gillies, and Mangipane are also eligible for the AHL playoffs.

Officially, at the trade deadline, the Flames had ZERO healthy goalies up with the big club.

Since Smith is on IR, wouldn’t Rittich’s recall also be an emergency recall? I honestly don’t know how it works in this situation.

I would think Valimaki, Dube and Phillips will see some time in Stockton once their teams are eliminated from WHL contention.

You can only make an emergency recall to replace a player who is unable to play due to illness, injury, or suspension. When you file the recall paperwork, you must indicate which player is being replaced.
Gillies is replacing Smith, but there's no second goalie who is unable to play to be replaced by Rittich.

I don't understand why they don't axe that 4 recall rule. Every GM I have heard talk about it just hates it. What is the purpose?

I think it's so that teams don't deplete the rosters of their AHL teams. Otherwise you could just call up everyone that you can fit under the cap since the 23 man roster limit is lifted now. The AHL is still a business that loves to have a competitive playoff drive.

Yeah I get that, but you would still need to fit them under the cap. Seems like a waste of cap space to have 6 players hanging out eating popcorn. I think most understand the value of playoff experience and wouldn't sink their teams like that. I think Treliving even mentioned one of the reasons for the Shore pick up is they needed depth because the farm has been drained with call ups and injuries So GMs are mindful of what is gping on.

It is the PA that wants the 4 call up rule. It prevents a NHL team from overloading the roster with younger players and sitting veterans.
NHL has tried negotiating removing it, but the PA won't drop it easily.

The easiest solution would be to make it like the rule in the playoffs where there's no limit to the number of recall transactions you can make, but you can only have a limited number of recalled players on your roster at any one time (as long as your AHL team is still active). If you recall one player, you must send another player down.

So Glass is stuck in no man's land? Can't get in the Flames lineup, and can't play for the Heat either?

What about Hrivik? He was injured and couldn't be reassigned. Stuck on NHL roster or able to go down to AHL?

So what is the reasoning with Glass, why wouldn't they want him available to help the farm team for the rest of the season?

Yeah the Glass one is kinda weird. Guess they want him up for the physical part just in case.

I suspect that, had they known Stewart would be made available, Glass doesn't get a call up.
