Edit. Never mind, looks like they moved to a new location. Same lodge though, it floats so they can move it around. Head out in smaller boats for the day, catch fish, bring em back, they slice em up and vacuum seal them to take home. Boom.

The first question would be what types of fish are you after? If it’s a fly in lodge I would look to Northern Saskatchewan. There’s a ton of them and there daily catch limits are a hell of a lot better then Alberta. The group I fish with stopped going to Albert 15 years ago and never looked back. (We target walleye and Jack).

BC has the salmon fishing but it’s pricy. Anything good and your looking 2500-3000k per person and twice that or more if you look to Queen Charlottes.

I can give you a huge list of places I would go if your chasing salt water fish but I’ll leave that for another time

PINE Coulee, Twin Valley, Clear Lake, Crawling Valley, the closest lake type fishing right off the top.

Cataract and Etherington just before are our 2 favorite out that direction. Cataract full of Brookies and some nicer ones if you know where to find them

Tough time of year to find river fishing with most small trout streams still closed and high water flows on the rivers that are open. Best bet is likely a Stillwater body.

We have caught cutthroat at spray lakes and it is one of my favorited campgrounds.

Streams north of the Bow drainage open April 1st.

I've never seen cutthroat trout at spray, only lakers and whitefish. Are you sure there are cutties in there?

Absolutely as I have caught them ( not often but they are there ). Usually just hanging out on the shoreline by one of the many streams of runoff from goat glacier in the campground. Been there many times as we lived in Canmore for almost 15 years and we would even live at spray for weeks at a time in the summer since it is was just a 20 minute drive to work. Another great fishing spot on the Smith Dorian is lake Chester. At one point it was no limit fishing with dolly varden and cutthroat now I believe it has limits.

Hey guys I’m looking to get into fly fishing and I was wondering if anyone has any advice as to what a decent starter rod/reel would be to start with and where I should go to buy the gear? I would like to support a Calgary based company if possible.

Being totally biased of course, you could check out my little side venture at www.secretcreekflyfishing.com or have a look in the power ring!

Honestly though, there is fine line here. You want to buy gear that is good enough to enjoy yourself, but don't go drop $1000 on a rod just because they have good marketing or whatever. Think about where you want to fish, and how you want to use the equipment and buy accordingly. If you have little to no idea of what you want/need then get some advice (which I'm not only happy to help with, but I'm sure that others in this thread are as well!)

This doesn't check your Calgary based requirement but I picked up this rod (9', 5lbs) and it's been great for me.

The reel is smooth and easy to adjust, the rod doesn't feel clunky to my novice hands and the case is, well, a case. I then went to a local shop to stock up on flies and accessories and ask some questions.

I had only been a few times prior to buying a rod so I really didn't want to spend a bunch before I knew how committed I'd be.

I have no input for starter stuff but whatever you do get a 5 or 6 weight as it is a good weight that can still do small stuff fine but is big enough for The Bow or bull trout on smaller waters. I only had a 5 weight for the longest time, versatile.

I would recommend that, and go with a 5wt with a 6wt line to start out. You’re going to get new line down the road anyway, but starting with a bit heavier line when you’re learning makes it easier. Once you feel comfortable you can make the switch to the 5wt (or the “right size”)
