If Fenwick is above what you want to spend and you have access to a Cabelas, grab their brand. It's great quality and cheaper than the name brands. Light to Medium-Light and short is good for jigging.
Just go in and tell them your price range and they will set you up.

Had an idea!

Haha. Yeah I actually have a rod/reel combo my dad passed down to me. Its a Shimano combo that he purchased about 30 years ago. Still works great. Pulled in a 34" catfish last weekend with it. By accident of course.
Would prefer to use it as a secondary though.

Not at all. One of my friends and I go rafting down the Bow at least once a year in a crappy little inflatable raft. I catch at least 4 trout each time I'm out and countless bites that get away. It's quite a productive river.

I caught my first fish on my fly rod. Then I promptly caught 8 more. All of the fish were grayling. A good friend took me to one of his hidden spots and gave me some very helpful tips. I'm hooked!

Bear Pond? There aren't many places around here to catch Grayling except for some stocked ponds like that and Wedge. I fished Bear Pond this weekend and it was great fishing.

Yeah I should say its hard without a boat. I also think that everyone should stick to the Bow and enjoy it. There is no better place to fish in Southern Alberta, so don't go looking!

FYI, that's the rod I landed this Tiger Muskie on.

It's caught a lot of big fish since I picked it up a year ago springtime.

No. A tributary of the smoky river by Grande Cache which is home for me.

I mostly have been fishing in and around the Lakeland area since that's where my parents live, mostly going for walleye and pike. We went out to Meadow Lake PP in Saskatchewan and the fishing was slooooow. I remember it being so much better when I was a kid.
That being said, I'm looking to put together a family trip to the mountains (probably closer to Jasper than Banff) and I was wondering if anyone knows of any lakes where you can catch walleye. From my minimal knowledge of the mountains, I think all the fish there are various trout. Also, it would be awesome if the lake in question was near (within ~1 hour) of a decent golf course and some hiking trails.
If you've got any knowledge that can help me it would appreciated. Also, if you've got any questions about fishing/golfing in and around the Lakeland post them and I'll try to help you.

Legendary day somewhere in ES1 - about 50 fish caught between the three of us.
Angelamc's personal best bull:
This Bull Trout was interesting because I caught him with a dry fly:

Nice fish. Is it all catch and release in that area?

We are heading out to the highwood this weekend, should be fun. Hopefully we will have some luck! Any suggestions on what type of flies to use right now on that river? I'm still pretty new so just want to get some thoughts from you experts!

Yes that river is C&R only, and all Bull Trout must be released province-wide.
I would welcome C&R for all rivers and streams in ES1. The fish population thrives, and you get much bigger fish.

All kinds of dry flies were working for us. A fly with some yellow in the body was very productive. We were finding fish in every little pocket. Wherever there is some kind of feature or structure in the water, drift a fly through there from downstream.
Angelamc has mastered streamer fishing, and caught many big fish that way.

Troutman, how were the conditions in ES1? I am hitting up the upper Oldman this weekend, and am hoping it isn't a muddy, blown-out mess.
Thanks!

Nice fish, looks like a great day. I was up in Meadow Lake Provincial Park last week and got tired of pike and wall eye so I tried for some trout at Little Raspberry Lake, it is stocked with Rainbow, Splake, Brown and Tiger. +30 day in July I knew it would be tough fishing but I like the lake.. its small with car toppers only, no boat trailers, so I had the lake to myself. Well we didn't catch any, marked a bunch at 40-60 feet that weren't interested in my bottom bouncer, but I had fun just slow trolling around the lake taking in the scenery while my wife read and my dog Stella snored. A crappy day of fishing is still better than any day of working!
Stella doesn't mind the heat as long as she can cool off:
I've fished that lake every year for the past 5 years, always give it at least a few hours and never brought anything out. It is apparently great for ice fishing though.

Water was clear as gin yesterday.
Even the Highwood looked ok around Longview.
Headwater streams don't take long to clear up.

Kids are finally interested in trying out fishing. Gonna do one of the fishing clinics at the Bow Habitat Station. No license needed and equipment is provided.

I'm up in Ulukhaktok, NT for work and tried my hand at char fishing. Turns out I'm like a week late for the arctic char, but I did catch a couple greenland cod and the local guy I'm up here training gave me some char fillets from his freezer. One of the perks of my job.
