What a turnaround in the last 15 minutes of this match.

Last year remember Nadal came back to beat Medvedev down 30-40 1-5 in the third set. This is not as crazy but could be a remarkable turnaround if he serves this out.

I didn't think we would need a 3rd set, but here we are...

Full credit to Medvedev he was the better player today. Going to be a great final tomorrow, thinking Thiem wins in 3

I believe the last time that happened was against Kyrgios in Mexico at the beginning of last year.

Thiem takes the opening set 6-4 - He broke Medvedev in a game where the Russian was up 40-love and dumped an overhead smash into the net.

to me Thiem is a bigger, stronger, more consistent Wawrinka, which bodes well for his prospects of multi-slam winner. but I think I'm going to put money on Medvedev ending up with the higher slam count in the end. over a long match I think the percentages tilt his way due to consistency. I don't know if there's been anyone before with as much control over a 6'6" frame. while he might never get to the same level as Djoker for pure defense, he's got more natural firepower.

anyhow I think the days of simply handing events to the Big 3 in advance are officially over. really excited to see what 2021 brings, hopefully the young Canadians can make some leaps and join in on the fun. and if it's going to be a Fed farewell, please one more significant trophy for that Sampras-like fairy tale ending.

and thanks of course dash_pinched for again being CP's tennis MVP. you set the tone for the rest of us to enjoy knowledgeable and respectable tennis fan discussion all season long!

Jack, I agree with the comparisons above (Nadal to Stan the Man and Medvedev to Djokovic), it's amazing to me how Medvedev can be so consistent with that funky looking swing, but his timing is impeccable and he does have a serious weapon with that serve.

Thiem is certainly going to be a contender at all the grand slams (especially the French Open), but he's going to be a tough out at any tourney. There is certainly a strong batch of young guys led by Tsitsipas and Rublev that are definitely going to be in the mix. Those two guys have separated themselves from the rest of the young guys on tour, in my opinion.

As far as the Canadians are concerned, the future does indeed look bright, but I think we have to remember (and I have to remind myself of this as well) that Shapo and Felix are still learning what it takes week in and week out to compete on the ATP tour. In my opinion, Denis had a fine season which included cracking the top 10 (briefly) and finishing the season ranked #12. Felix made three finals and did win his first ATP title in doubles (a Masters 1000 event as well), but is still looking for that elusive first singles crown. He did make a coaching change which was definitely needed and I really believe that first ATP singles title will be won in 2021.

As for the older guys, Milos had a fine season and should have beat Djoker at the Western and Southern in the final. For the most part, he was healthy and he can still be dangerous (put it this way, nobody wants to face him in the first week of a grand slam). Also, I think Vasek is playing better now than he was six years ago when he was ranked #25 in the world, he has his ranking all the way up to #61 in the world which should mean automatic entry into all the grand slams and Masters 1000 tourneys.

Of course, we can't forget the ladies. Bianca will be back in 2021 and once she shakes off the rust, she will be contending for trophies once again. Leylah is 18 years old and is ranked #88 on the WTA tour, she's only going to get stronger and better in 2021. Genie had a fine 2020 and has put in the hard work to rebuild her ranking. Who knows, maybe she can re-capture some magic in Melbourne if we have an Aussie Open in 2021.

Let me wrap this up by wishing everybody here a happy and safe holiday season and all the best in 2021.

Another great tennis season in the books, thanks to everyone for making this thread my favorite on CP. Thanks to DP for posting scores of every tournament, even ones when there are 8 people watching, DP is there giving updates. Tennis has been a much needed distraction from 2020.

Some awards I'm giving out for this year

Most improved players : Diego Schwarzman , Andrew Rublev and Jannick Sinner.

Most disappointing players: Karen Khachanov, Mario Berrettini and Roger Federer. I'm jjk about Federer but I bet you were pissed reading that lol.

Greatest moment: For me no question Nadal winning his 20th Grand Slam. No one gave him a chance going into the tournament and all he does is win the whole thing without dropping a set and bagel Djokovic in the finals when Djokovic hadn't lost a match all year. Oh and he also ties the record for most Grand Slams by a man with Fed.

2021 Slam Winners:

AO - Medvedev
FO - Nadal
Wimbledon - Djokovic
US - Thiem

Predicted rankings for end of next year:

Bianca Andreescu - 3
Shapo - 8
Felix - 15
Milos - 10
Goffin - 7

Top 5 at the end of 2021

Thiem
Nadal
Djokovic
Medvedev
Federer

I don't think this is Feds last year and I predict he makes one final at a Slam. I also say Serena Williams wins one slam and Bianca will win one as well.

Obviously, the more matches you play, the more double faults you will tally, but we have two young Canadians in the silver and bronze positions.

I saw online players will be allowed to arrive in Australia on January 7th will have to quarantine for 2 weeks and then the AO will begin on January 25th. Players will be allowed to practice with police supervision during the 2 week quarantine.
