Have to go with Regehr. Kipper and Iggy get the credit for the 2004 run but Reggie was a beast

I’m assuming that Macinnis, Gio, Suter, and Regehr are the locks.

Then I think 3 of Reinhart, Brodie, Housley, Macoun, and Phaneuf make up the top 7.

I know he’s polarizing on here but Phaneuf deserves to be on this roster IMO. He maybe didn’t have the longevity but his peak was great. Was a Calder finalist, Norris runner-up, and 1st team NHL All-Star as a Flame.

Phaneuf, when he was at his peak on the Flames was certainly in that upper echelon. He was such an exciting and impactful player. It's really a shame the ways things went afterwards.

I think Phaneuf makes it somewhere in the last 3 spots.

His rookie year was so much fun. He was in a legitimate conversation with Crosby and Ovechkin for Rookie of the year.

The injury that killed his mobility really hurt him a lot.

I actually think Dion's early success says more about how good Roman Hamrlik was then it does about how good Dion was.

I love Gio but it was an easy choice for MacInnis. A point per game defenceman with over 800 Flames games and the team's only Conn Smyth.

Overall, I'm thinking the top 6 is set with MacInnis, Gio, Suter, Reinhart, Regehr, and Macoun. Then it's Brodie vs Phaneuf for the 7th spot.

Brodie has surpassed Regehr in my eyes.

Giordano - MacInnis
Suter - Brodie
Regehr - Reinhart

Phaneuf vs. Macoun for the 7th.

You think TJ Brodie is 4th best defenseman in the history of the Calgary Flames???

I mean he might only be the 3rd best Dman on this team right now.

Yikes....strike a huge one for recency bias i guess.

I suspect we might both be thinking of the same player. I plan on starting the promotional lobbying after the first four are set... and if we aren't...well your guy sucks!

Ended up voting for Giordano. Didn’t see MacInnis play though his stats do speak for themselves. Seeing that he was running away with it, thought Gio could get a few more votes thrown in his way.

Good all-time tip pairing regardless.

Also love the Wideman troll vote.

Gio is great but MacInnis is one of the best of all time.

Are we voting LD and RD?
Wherever Gio end up MacInnis and Suter should be a pairing.

Disagree. Phaneuf had his 60 point, Norris runner up season without Hamrlik. Hamrlik was definitely a good player and mentor for him but Dion had his best season without him. Phaneuf was very good in his first 3 seasons, he had hip issues that seemed to derail him.

Based on the highest scoring defenceman remaining you must mean Phil Housley!

I think you might be talking about the player who once was a second team all star while leading the league in plus minus. Not sure one great season in a short tenure should be enough for this list but am willing to hear the arguments.

I will do my best to provide them when the time is right- I realize tenure works against him - am not fully decided where he ranks. in my mind- but he's in the bottom half convo

I will say that even in his 2nd 'not great' season he finished 6th in Norris trophy voting (behind him was Suter then 4 hall of famers including the aforementioned Housley. finished 6th in all star voting, and was a pedestrian +43. oh and the team won the cup that year

Maybe you're correct, but wasn't he also heavily sheltered that year? I could be miss remembering, but that Norris reputation was quickly followed by the whole "he's not even the best defenseman on his team" mantra. I liked Dion, but the shine wore off pretty quick as the years progressed. At least for me.

Anyways, this is an easy Macinnis vote for me. 28+ Gio vs 28+ Al might be a different story, but Al was a #1 from his early 20's on. While Gio didn't hit his full stride until he was half way through his career. Gio is the obvious second choice though.

Dion was 1st on the team and 5th in the league that season with an ATOI (average time on ice) of 26:25 minutes per game. The next closest on the team was Regehr with 21:20. By those stats I’m not sure he was sheltered and I’m not sure he wasn’t the best defence man on the team, however I was a young fan at the time so I might be missing some things but statistically I think he was deserving of it
