Calgary Flames All Time Roster - #4 Right Wing
So some details ...
1. Calgary players only
2. I'll look at games played, production and PPG to list options.
3. My cut off won't effect options as I'll go deeper than required
4. I'll label them by rank (3rd line LW) but don't select the player that matches that role the best, pick the best player.
Day to Day
We elect a position, say 2nd line RW, remove that name and do the 3rd line RW the next day.
I'll post a summary as we go along.
Calgary Flames All Time Roster
Gary Roberts - Joe Nieuwendyk - Jarome Iginla
Johnny Gaudreau - Doug Gilmour - Theo Fleury
Matthew Tkachuk - Sean Monahan - Lanny McDonald
Alex Tanguay - Joel Otto - RW4
D1 - D2
D3 - D4
D5 - D6
Miikka Kiprusoff
Mike Vernon

Had to go Mullen. 51 goals in 89, led the team in points.

Loob was a great player, exciting and has the whole cool name thing which helped make him a hit with the fans.
But you can make the argument that Mullen was the best player on the great 1989 team. And he was big in the playoffs.
Compare their playoff stats with the Flames:
Mullen: 61 GP, 35 goals
Loob: 73 GP, 26 goals
This is 100% Mullen.

If I had a choice to lump a bunch of players here, it'll be Makarov, Loob, Lindholm, and McDonald. Makarov is probably the most talented of all Flames and that's why he's on my 4th All-time right wing list. It's really too bad the NHL didn't know, and for the most part, still doesn't know how to play the possession game with puck like what the Russians used to do. The NHL's mentality is dump and chase and clog up the middle. What the KLM line did back in the day was and is still one of the best things I've ever seen in hockey. So, when Johnny hockey brought some of that in his first couple of years to the Flames, i'm sure a lot of kids were drawn to that. It's too bad NHL hockey hacked him down and now Gaudreau is kind of scared doing all the things he's done in the past.

Kind of crazy that it looks like Loob and Makarov won’t make the cut......2 very talented players. That’s some kind of RW depth.

My thoughts exactly.
Both were excellent 200 foot players for the offense they brought. Loob was a great PKer and was a scoring threat when a man down.
Mullen more so, but both were tougher than you would think at first glance, never afraid to go to the scary areas in a very rough era of the NHL. Tenacity to burn.
Both were awesome to me as a kid. I met Loob in the airport with my dad as he was leaving Calgary to go back to Sweden. I got his autograph and he talked to us for about 5 minutes.
I met Joey Mullen at a McDonalds. Got his autograph and laughed as he pointed out I was wearing different socks. Told me it was OK, that he sometimes does it too.
Real toss up to me but in the end had to go with the boy from Hells Kitchen.

Makarov is the most talented guy left, which is really saying something given his age when he arrived. He did stuff I've never seen before or since, and I think Roberts still owes him a child named Sergei.
That said, in terms of accomplishment in the Flaming C you have to vote for Joey Mullen or Hakan Loob ahead of him.
Went with Mullen as highest scoring American at the time (I think).

What an amazing wealth of quality RW the Flames have had over the years.
I spent my vote this time voting for my favorite Flame Elias Lindholm. He's not done yet but I am the happiest fan ever that he is here in the Flaming C.
Anywhere I can blindly toss a vote for the guy, he has it.

Maybe when you look at his total career I agree. But when asked what went wrong with the 89-90 Flames, Gretzky said "they miss Hakan Loob" (who was replaced by Makarov).

Never got to see guys like Mullen, Loob, Makarov. The fourth line already has one of my other favourites in Tanguay, I'd like to see Lindholm there.
In my opinion, 30 goals is the new 40 and I can see him hitting that mark every year while being great defensively. I hope he is a Flame for the rest of his career.

It's questionable for sure.
Mullen and Loob both had 1st team NHL All-Star selections, Makarov never sniffed that. And Mullen/Loob both had better seasons than Makarov's best season.
Maybe he had the most natural talent but he wasn't the best player.

Makarov is sometimes at the top of the lists I have seen of greatest Russian player of all time. He won the scoring title nine times!
He was 31 when he came to the NHL. If he played his whole career in the NHL he for sure would have all-star selections and trophies. Sergei might have even be more "talented" than Iginla. He went to the HHOF in 2016.
Still, I voted Mullen, just for actual impact on the Flames.

That was not his career as a Flames player though.
If we are looking at entire Career then Jagr should be the 1st line RW.

Love Mullen so much, but had to go with one of my favs Loob! Can we please agree at the end of this poll to move either Mullen or Loob to the left wing and bounce Tanguay. I bet both would be better then him even on their off wing.

Yeah total body of work probably looks something like:
Jagr
Hull/Iginla/Makarov
St louis
Mullen/McDonald
Fleury
Loob(trickier dealing with his international career both pre and post nhl ) suspect he goes one or 2 tiers up?
Amonte/nolan
Etc
It’s a storied list

The poll says "pick the best player". With that criteria, Jagr, Makarov, Iginla, Hull.

I voted for Loob last time knowing Lanny was going to win. So having got to cast a vote for my favorite Flame, this round I voted for who I think is most deserving, and that's Mullen. I agree that looking at the entire career Makarov is the best, but I think as far as individual impact on this team Mullen is the choice.
