Default Who in your opinion is the most overrated player of all-time?

For me it's probably Shane Doan. His status as a great leader I feel made people believe he was a much better player than he actually was. I saw some people say they would take him over Iggy which is absolute blasphemy. Doan was never a superstar at any point in his career.

3rd leading scorer in the history of the game.

5 time Stanley Cup winner, twice as captain.

2 time Hart trophy winner, 2 time Pearson winner, Conn Smythe winner

=

Over rated?

Tough crowd.

I hated the guy with a passion as well, but he is, by almost any metric, one of the best players to ever take the ice.

His scoring is a function of era and longevity and Rangers cup is a function of spending. His post Gretzky Oilers cup would be his notable accomplishment.

I don't know about all time, but for me it's Jonathan Toews in the cap era. No his cup rings don't do much for me because those are team accomplishments. The stories about how Crosby almost had to bow down to his majesty at the Olympics because he's the greatest leader in all of hockey were just so lame.

Messier, Anderson, Gilles are all in the discussion.

While I wouldn't call him over rated, I've always said that Gretzky came along at the perfect time and the perfect storm of a really talent stretched NHL, which allowed him to rack up the points that he did.

Alexander Daigle. He was considered a can't miss prospect in his draft year and yet failed to live up to the hype when he got to the NHL.

Connor McDavid. The amount of hype this guy gets is higher than anyone in history. Is he great offensive player? Yes. He is not a complete player though and has not really proven anything in the NHL yet except he can rack up points. The media talks about him in the same breath as the all time greats and he just isn't.

Nope. Daigle had three 20 goal, 50 point seasons in the NHL, well over 300 NHL points and a number of additional seasons playing pro hockey in Europe. He shouldn't have gone first overall, obviously, but that's still miles better than, say, Nail Yakupov.

I'm voting Messier as well, the guy bought into his own hype so much. Greatest captain? Nah, that guy's name is Yzerman.

You can be a great player and still be overrated.

Trevor Linden, but maybe that's because I live in Vancouver.
People here act like he's their Iginla. Nice guy, but as a player he's more like a Craig Conroy.

+1 on Shane Doan too.

No one is saying Messier sucked at hockey. Far from it. But when you personally hand out a leadership award each year that has your own name on it, you invite this kind of response.
