Pools are like boats - great for the first 3 days of ownership... and then you realize what a giant, depreciating asset you hardly use it is.

Exactly.
One does get a long season here, with a heater selectively used, but it is a massive resource sucker regardless.

A long pool season in Calgary? Compared to where exactly?

I guarantee that the pharmacies would all order it for you and they'd likely have it by Monday

One of the responses in that reddit thread I found earlier yielded this.
No idea what grade you need or how you order this stuff (do you need a permit?) or how long it takes to ship... but Biotech grade is $107/5kg (or $26 per kg) vs reagent grade at $71/5kg or $17 per kg. Putting biotech grade boric acid sounds nefarious though.
If you're doing your experiment anyways, could consider this site while you wait?
https://www.fishersci.com/shop/produ...emical/p-31224
This there's this website they mentioned. I feel like I'm doing something wrong when looking at the prices.
Sorry, I'm not much help.

A boat is a hole in the water you pour money into. So I guess a pool is a hole you pour water and money into.

Grades for chemicals is only to describe purity. Biotechnology grade is fairly high.
I don't know if non scientists can buy from Fisher but the site you linked is the US site. You want fishersci.ca

anybody can typically buy from vwr.com, fishersci.com or sigma-aldrich.com. But these are companies that typically cater more to research and pilot scale type programs. Meaning you are going to be paying a significant premium for the chemical. That said you'll be assured of the purity.
You should be able to get boric acid from numerous places...Home Depot Walmart etc. Should be in the pest control aisles.
You can also get it from amazon.com
http://www.amazon.com/Orthoboric-Con.../dp/B00K2DTJAC
Likely can get it on amazon.ca as well.
Note boric acid for this purpose may also be called orthoboric acid
From your friendly neighbourhood boron chemist.

Funny how threads like this come back.
Was looking for some boric acid today to take care of an ant problem.
The pharmacist at Shoppers had no clue what it was. Sobeys pharmacy... Same thing.
I'm still looking.

sigma-aldrich or fishersci but that grade may be higher than you need. In Calgary, you can try chemfax.

For a 10,000GAL pool you'd have to add 16.6KG OF BORAX! Then you have to add about 8 LITRES of acid to counteract the PH rise from the borax.
The benefit of using boric acid is that it's PH impact on the pool is limited, and the acid in the boric acid counteracts the Ph rise from the boric-part of boric acid, so it's essentially Ph neutral from a pool-Ph perspective.
The #### you learn with a pool... I'm never swimming in a public pool again.

Wouldn't Borax work fine for this application? Most garden stores carry it and *believe* borax is preferred over the straight acid for this application.

Borax works, you just need a ####e tonne of it. The actual acid is much more concentrated so you don’t need as much.

Wait....so you need a bunch of acid to dump into a pool?
What exactly are you trying to dissolve? Fingerprints? Bodies?
