Calgary Flames All Time Roster - #2 Right Wing
So some details ...
1. Calgary players only
2. I'll look at games played, production and PPG to list options.
3. My cut off won't effect options as I'll go deeper than required
4. I'll label them by rank (3rd line LW) but don't select the player that matches that role the best, pick the best player.
Day to Day
We elect a position, say 2nd line RW, remove that name and do the 3rd line RW the next day.
I'll post a summary as we go along.
Calgary Flames All Time Roster
Gary Roberts - Joe Nieuwendyk - Jarome Iginla
Johnny Gaudreau - Doug Gilmour - RW2
Matthew Tkachuk - Sean Monahan - RW3
Alex Tanguay - Joel Otto - RW4
D1 - D2
D3 - D4
D5 - D6
Miikka Kiprusoff
Mike Vernon

Should be an easy number 2.
Fleury is potentially the most recognizable Flame outside of Iginla and in my opinion the most blatant number missing from the rafters.

Lanny gets my vote here, tinged with sentimentality no doubt. His 66 goal season is the greatest individual season in Flames history, IMO. Neck and neck with Gretzky for the goal scoring lead all year.
Caps his regular season career off with a stunning run (7 goals in 7 games) amid seriously degrading skills to get to 500 goals.
Scores most iconic goal in Flames history.
Prior to the Flames arriving in town, we were force fed the Leafs on HNIC so he was a household name. Having this guy in a Flames uniform was a huge thrill for kids like me.

Man, RW sure is deep. I'd like to get Makarov in this lineup, but hard to vote him ahead of Iginla, Fleury, Loob and Lanny (even if at his prime non-NHL years he was arguably better than most/all of them).

I never knew he scored 7 in 7 to get to 500. With only 11 goals on the season, most must have thought 500 was a pipe dream as March started. Were they giving him PP time or extra opportunity? (I was only 2 at the time).

If the criteria is simply "best player" don't you have to pick Makarov? He led the Soviet League in scoring nine times!
This one is tough - Lanny, Theo, Joey all had over 1000 points. Sergei and Hakan would have put up huge numbers too if they played more in the NHL.

The second line right wing was actually harder to pick since there were so many great right wingers on the Flames. Mullen is a prime example. What a player!
However, I chose Fleury. What's cool about him is that he plays all 3 forward positions as well as the left point guard. Very versatile player for such a feisty little guy that plays big in every way.

Makarov , also, had a very positive present and future impact on his two young linemates...Roberts and Nieuwendyk.
He was incredibly demanding.
However, Fleury is still the right pick, IMO.

I also voted for Mullen. But between him and Fleury it almost is a coin flip.
His 110 point 1989 season is the second highest total in franchise history, and he also had two other 40 goal seasons plus the 36 goals in 1990. To me it was the additions of him and Gary Suter that really closed the gap on the Oilers for the Flames. Joel Otto was the first step, Suter as a rookie in 85-86 seemed to be a second step, Vernon being able to give the team better goaltending was another one, and Mullen re-invigorated the team up front to transition the forward ranks to move on form the early 80's guys to the guys who would eventually lead the team to the cup.
But admittedly...I sort of voted before thinking enough to realize Fleury was still on the list. Given a do over, would vote Theo.

This poll says everything about why #14 should be in the rafters. If #9 is, then so should #14.
Fleury - 82% of the vote
McDonald - 8% of the vote

You’re welcome to set up a poll asking that question. I assure you the result will be different.

Nah I think this poll better represents Fleury vs McDonald, while removing people's personal feelings. It's unbiased.

Iginla
Fleury
McDonald
They'll make the list, probably in that order. Then for the 4th we have to chose between Loob, Mullen and Makarov. I'm sure it will be a race between Loob and Mullen. Loob is likely the top winger from Sweden and Mullen could be considered top American winger. They both played for the Flames. At the same time. They both deserve to be on this list. One will be left off. That sucks. Good thing this is just a fan forum and nothing official.
I voted Mullen because I think he is underrated in what he brought to the Flames. He was a tough player who would go to the dirty areas and come out with a goal or assist. Don't let his size and especially his low penalty minutes fool you. He wasn't afraid to get his nose in the dirty areas, he just was smart enough to not take a penalty. he had 6 straight seasons scoring 40 or more goals, 3 of them were complete seasons in Calgary (one was during the year he was traded from St.Louis, and obviously the other two were in St.Louis).
I remember when he was traded, for a low return too, and I believe Cliff Fletcher said, or insinuated that Mullen was too old and not going to perform anymore. He did perform for a few more years. Fletcher just had to soften the blow of losing such a good player, but that was one of the worst trades Fletcher made as Flames GM.

I was pretty young but I don't recall him getting a bunch of extra opportunities, other than playing a number of games in a row after being scratched on and off. He was a total non factor that year, and I remember believing that 500 was a lost cause and then that run came out of nowhere. He played four more games the rest of the year and was skunked in those.

I don't think this poll says everything about it personally. There is a lot at play in the discussion, including the generational aspect.
But it does show how adored Fleury was (still is) by many, many Flames fans. To me that is the reason you put his sweater in the rafters even if you don't like the guy.
