Last decade when the Canucks were good you could hear maybe a little extra delight in his voice when calling their games but overall I think he was pretty professional. The only issue I had was as said above it was a little cringey at times when he called players by nicknames or first names.

I still think he's a great pbp guy, and to be honest, he's been mostly impartial IMO. Some people tend to have rose coloured glasses (or earbuds?) on when talking about a pbp guy. If the pbp guys isn't talking glowingly about the team they're cheering for, they automatically get labelled a "so and so" homer.
This is all just speculation on my part, but it does feel like the whole pandemic situation may have had something to do with it. It could be he was or someone close to him was affected by Covid, and made him re-evaluate what's important, or maybe it's cost cutting from Rogers. Either way, a bit sad to see he didn't get a proper send off before retiring.

Grats on a great career. I'll always enjoy his "here's johnny" call, as others have already posted.

I thought he was fine.
He certainly sounded happier when the Canucks were leading in a game. Meh.

I very much doubt that is the direction Rogers will want to go. More than likely this will mean more time and opportunity for younger (than Hughson) broadcasters like Ball, Singh, etc.

This is going waaaaay back but I remember Hughson as a very young long haired Parts "Kid" at Fort Motors in Fort St John, BC. He got his first PxP gig calling the Fort St John Flyers games of the North Peace Hockey League on the local FSJ Radio station CKNL! Lots of water under the bridge since then.

One of the best. Also one of the worst homers ever.
I'll miss his play by play.

Not my favorite guy who's had that position for sure.
His pauses were cringeworthy at times when the play was requiring some context. He did gt better later on but when he first started on HNIC it was palpable how much he lacked vs guys like Whitman and Cole.
He isnt even the best guy to come out of Canuck broadcasts as that title belongs to Jim Robson when he was doing TV AND radio for a few years. CKNW iirc.
He and Maher were the 2 best i have ever listened to on radio.
Good career for Hughson though and full marks for getting to the peak of his profession.
