Icon48 Jim Hughson retires after 42-year broadcasting career

https://twitter.com/user/status/1440360287375220746

I thought Hughson had an excellent voice for the game. Grew up hearing him as the commentator for EA's NHL series. He'll be missed.

Congrats on amazing career!

Would be lying though if I said this didn't make me happy. Have never liked his work and his blatant Canucks homerism

I get what you are saying, but Hughson's call in Game 6 in 2015 was legendary. He could turn the homerism off when needed, and when he did he was fantastic.

one of my favourite play-by-play calls he ever made was when the av's were playing the canucks.
jeff finger of the avalanche got a breakaway and jim blurts out.... "and there goes Finger up the middle on Luongo!!!"
there was an awkward silence in the room, my friends and i all looked at each other and then burst out laughing.

When he wasn't broadcasting Canucks games, he was one of the best. I imagine as a Canucks fan, he was just as appreciated.

Hope he enjoys retirement.

I liked him but he got way too concerned with line match-ups in his later years.

Too bad, once he moved to national (rather than Vancouver games only) his true talent level really shined thru.

Does this mean more Romanuk, or do they move someone like Ball to National? Is the addition of Cuthbert last year sufficient to handle all the games?

Suprised he’s hanging them up so soon! He’s likely moving on to something more important in his life. All the best Jim!

This is suprising. I thought the combo of Cuthbert and Hughson would have been an great national play-by-play team for Sportsnet.

Yeah that seems young for a broadcaster to retire. Also hard to believe he's been doing it for 42 years though!

So, how long did Bob Cole call play for? 98 years?

I don't think Romanuk is around anymore. Perhaps Harnarayan Singh?

EDIT: confirmed - Romanuk hasn't been with Sportsnet since 2018.

Also grew up with him as the voice for EA NHL, and aside from his Canuck love he called the game in a passionate and exciting fashion. As a hockey fan that's all I can ask for.

Seems kind of early for a PBP guy. I wonder if he didn't feel comfortable traveling and working during the pandemic?
