It’s the same reason the McDonald’s, Coke’s, and Amazon’s of the world continue to pump money into marketing despite being as big as they can possibly get.

I understand that’s the theory. But I wonder how much it works in practice. In your banking example, or say, buying a car, there’s only a few big brands and they all are well known anyway.

The old saying "out if sight out of mind" applies to even well known brands if they don't advertise to the extent of their competitors. Today's consumers are drawn to shiny new things so you have to be on top of things to remain relevant if you operate in a competitive market segment.

From your last trip to a Flames game, tell me what law firm advertised there. I know because that’s my business, but I bet most people don’t. In fact, a lot wouldn’t even know it if I gave a list.

But that's not the purpose/intent. Of course, very few people would be able to recall the name of that firm from memory (I know I can't). However, when looking for a law firm, when looking at a list of names, that firm will be more familiar than they otherwise would have been.

It could be worse and at least it is a black patch to match the jersey.

If you google personal injury law calgary it’s the first hit. That search plus the ad at the game will create familiarity. Advertising works, it’s just hard to measure.

I purposely avoid buying things that are advertized to me. If more people do this perhaps we can stop this BS after onlybone season.

Really, because that's not the firm I remember advertises there (not a PI firm at all). The firm I'm thinking of - any clients that base their decision on any ads are few and far between, and likely not worth the price of the ad.

so when you buy an "official" jersey from the team store, will it come with the patch of the partner?

I'm surprised it has taken this long. When the cap came in and revenue splitting between teams and players was introduced, I figured it was going to happen eventually. The pursuit for new streams of revenue is important to the survival of the league when you consider it's a gate driven league still in a changing world.

Probably not. If you buy an AHL or ECHL jersey, it doesn't come with a sponsor's patch. The same is true for the NBA and CFL.

It’s such crap cause either way you have to buy a jersey with a marketing logo on it or buy a jersey that doesn’t resemble game worn jerseys.
Put logos on helmets, gloves, pants, socks but keep them off jerseys.
I respected the NHL for not tarnishing their jerseys with this crap but greed always reins supreme.
It’s extremely disappointing for me to see this come to fruition.

I dont understand why they dont just put them on the pants. Same visibility and you don't deal with the backlash.
