The deal will carry an average annual value of $14 million for Draisaitl, who was entering the final season of his deal at a cap hit of $8.5 million.
He will be the league's highest-paid player once the contract kicks in next summer, taking over ahead of Toronto Maple Leafs centre Auston Matthews, who carries an AAV of $13.25 million on his four-year deal.

Like I said in the speculation thread I do not see Draisaitl extending with a year out unless there is an incredibly strong indication if not commitment that McDavid will do the same.

Well I'm not surprised at the salary but I am surprised he decided to hitch his wagon to Edmonton. Have to think McDavid will follow next season. Kind of surprising given their roster makeup as they are going to have to be continuously rebuilding on the fly through free agency given their lack of up and coming talent.

This must be the hometown discount.

Don’t like it, the dream scenario of both of them leaving is dead haha.

They're really going to have 54.25M tied up in McDavid, Draisaitl, Nurse, Campbell + Bouchard come 2026.

It's also tough to say - because it's a lot of money to turn down - and nothing prevents him from being able to demand a trade in the future anyways if McDavid leaves.
You take the guaranteed money, and still can leave if absolutely necessary.
$112M is a lot of money to turn down. He would have needed to get $16M a year over 7 years to get the same value and I'm just not sure that was going to be on the table.
You take the money and guarantee that you are set for life - then you worry about the rest later.

Not much the Oilers can do. They have to sign their two stars to massive contracts and try to fill out the rest of the roster with filler, or decent players willing to take a cut to play there. Don't blame them for signing one of the elite players in the game for this much cash, they just hope he isn't too brutal by the end of it, because there's a good chance the team will be a disaster by then. Going for it now, worry about the incoming mess later. Can't blame them.

I get the feeling that Katz is probably doing a lot for these guys behind the scenes. Money is alway king when it comes to negotiations like this as careers are short.

The dream scenario is that a team that is the oldest in the league keeps these guys around at huge contracts and unable to build a team.
Bouchard, Nurse, McDavid and Drai will eat 40% of the cap and its amazing

Can't wait to see how they make this work.....especially when Drysaddle takes the plunge that most players do in 3-4 years.
