Hey Fisher is it patially due to razor burn? My skin is sensitive to everything, and I can’t use cartridge type blades. I switched to a straight razor and made a huge difference. I do it more like every other day.

Just grow a beard. Itches like hell for like a month, then you're in the clear.

What was the learning curve like on using a straight razor? Did you just watch some YouTube videos?

I looked into hair removal previously because I was too lazy to shave and was hoping to find a more permanent solution. I did not have it done because what I found was that the cost was significantly more than I expected and it was a much more intensive program than I expected. It would have involved many treatments and repeated visits and facial hair is apparently more coarse than other body hair so it is more difficult to remove.

I can't speak for him, but for me the learning curve was nearly zero. It's not rocket science and if you've been shaving with a razor in general for years, it's not the big of a transition.

Yeah. It was surprisingly easy. The tensile strength of your skin becomes apparent quickly. You certainly need to be paying attention, which I like about it. Gives me a few minutes to focus on something. I haven’t got bored of it yet and I’m going on 10 years with the same blade.

Oh wait, you're talking about the straight razor...I don't have one of those and I can't say anything about the ease of that!

It’s super easy. The hardest part is figuring out how to hold it properly with each hand.

Haha, were you thinking I didn't know how to shave with, like, a Mach 3?

You switch hands?!
I had a problem with irritation on my neck with shaving and jumped to a straight razor. I ended up dialing back to a safety razor and find it's a little easier from a "don't need to be super focused" perspective, while still not irritating my neck. Unless you're super keen on the idea of a straight razor, the safety razor might be an easier next step.

I have a beard too but if I didn’t shave my neck I’d just look like Cousin Itt. Well, a bald Cousin Itt because the universe is an #######.

Haha, no I just thought that we were talking about the safety razors. They are a little different from a Mach 3 or whatever, and you can cut yourself pretty good with them. So, that's why I said the learning curve was essentially zero. I've actually heard the same about the straight razors, but I haven't tried one.

I find it weird that we're in the 21st century, we have advanced tech in so much of our daily lives, yet the only way to remove hair from one's face is with a super sharp steel blade. And the best method of using that blade is with an invention from over a century ago that has barely changed (safety razor)
I remember a similar train of thought, and my dislike of shaving, is what drove me to try out my mom's Nair product on my face when I was a teenager. That's a mistake that one only needs to make once

Ohh, I got you. Maybe a safety razor will be the thing to try before I go hog wild and get a straight razor. Right now I'm growing a Grizzly Adams beard, but I'll probably shave it off once it gets ridiculous.

You also have to strop a straight blade to keep it sharp, but you can just replace the blade in a safety razor.

Here's a question: what is it that's enjoyable about the process of shaving with a straight / safety razor? Do you just feel bad ass, or what's the deal? This is one of those things where it's never been clear to me and I always wonder what I'm missing out on - obviously my barber shaves me with a straight razor and that doesn't make me want to do it myself so it's a mystery to me.

It's not the enjoyment factor for me personally, it's that you get a much better shave and my skin is so much nicer. Time-wise it's almost the exact same and cost-wise the safety is much cheaper.

It’s not the driving factor at all. Sensitive skin was. Nothing about it feels “cool” to me and I haven’t tried to convince anyone it’s the way to go or anything. It was an option that worked for me.
I also haven’t spent a single cent on shaving supplies in 10 years…
