The other thing is my wife's hair straightener. "Did I turn it off?" she would ask, I'd shrug, so we'd turn around just in case, and it was always off. So I bought a smart plug for it so now we can kill the power from anywhere instead of going back.
I'm not really into smart plugs and home automation and all of that stuff, but those two things have saved me much worry and time.

wait... are we married to the same woman?? or maybe our wives are actually twins, separated at birth??

I do this all the time with my business.
"You didnt call me back!"
You didnt leave a message.
"You could see I called on your caller ID!"
You have no idea what I see on my caller ID. It could be private with no number, it could be a number with no name, you could have called me from work and so all I'd get is a main switchboard number from a company I dont recognize, I'm not randomly calling back numbers on missed calls. Leave a message.
Name, phone number (slowly and coherently!) and maybe a brief heads-up about what its about.
Like those people whose Voicemail messages are just: "You know what to do after the beep!"
Clearly a great many people in fact do not 'know what to do.'
I know we all hate leaving voice messages, but in a business and professional setting its important.

It really GMG that Kirpal -- who called from a very obviously spoofed Edmonton number on my mobile to sell me furnace and duct cleaning for one low price -- hung up on me when I told him the house is 5,000 sq-ft and has three furnaces.
I get cold in my big lonely palace, okay?! Why am I not allowed to get furnace and duct cleaning for one low price like everybody else's he's auto-dialing?!

I've played dumb and answered questions before to a variety of scammers and they always hang up after a few minutes max.
I think they target seniors and a lot of times you can tell in the voice. If you're not a senior, they move on quickly.

That's an interesting one, does the sensor get mounted onto the door?
I have a LiftMaster garage door opener to begin with, so I just bought this one which was literally ten minutes to set up.
- Install app on phone, create account.
- Plug MyQ Bridge into network switch, add it to the app.
- Remove old garage door controller and install new one (it's two thin low voltage copper wires, I personally didn't even bother to turn off the power).
- Complete joining process to get all the components talking to each other.
It was pretty straightforward.

I have myQ. It is great except when I am outside working and i get texts from my wife "why is the garage door open?"

Then moon the camera.

Just before Christmas, I had let my brother-in-law store my sister's present in my garage because it was this big, custom made wooden bench thing. He has the access code to my garage. No problem. Sometimes he takes my ladder, brings it back, etc.
A night or two later, with the bench thing far from my mind, I was down in the basement watching TV with my wife, but left my phone upstairs. "No big deal" I thought. "What am I going to miss? It is good to not be tethered to my phone sometimes."
My wife nodded off and woke up and saw on her phone that the garage door had opened and remained open (thanks MyQ!). Expecting the worst, I shot up, looked outside through the basement window to the garage (detached, out back) and saw lights on inside. That was not normal. Must be thieves and I must do something!
As I ran to the garage with a snow shovel, I could hear voices inside. Now I'm in full-on defend my turf mode and ready for action. I burst in and... there's my niece standing there. "Hey Uncle James!" Along with my brother-in-law and his dad.
If I had my phone with me in the basement, I would've noticed his texts asking me if they could come and get the bench, and then just saying that they were coming to get the bench, and then that they were in my garage getting the bench.
So to keep this (barely) on topic, it grinds my gears that I have my phone with me 95% of the time and miss nothing, but leave it upstairs once and I end up running to the garage with no jacket and a shovel ready to jab some filthy thieves in the face. And the MyQ thing works nicely.

Oh god the last thing this administration needs to do is this they need to install MORE traffic signals. Theyve almost doubled the net total of signals in the city over the last 6 years. End the madness

Not a gear grinder but rather it makes me shake my head but as I was leaving the office today I saw someone rip down 4th Ave on a crotch rocket. I understand it is pretty warm and we've had a good period of melting but it still seems crazy to be riding in January on streets that are potentially covered in ice and definitely covered in gravel. I imagine that once you leave the main streets it becomes chaos on the side streets.

Meh, I got passed on Bow Trail headed toward downtown by a guy on a Harley-Davidson my first winter in Calgary, around January 15th actually.
They don't call 'em "Donors" for nothing.

I meant the ones that flash lights above the crosswalk to alert drivers, not the pedestrian controlled traffic lights.

It's like using electric scooters, trying to fly during the holiday season or drunkenly operating a chainsaw: any resulting story that comes out of it isn't overly surprising and you might (probably?) feel in your unspoken mind that they probably deserved it.

No, it’s insane. I’ve been on a motorcycle in the snow and it’s terrifying (I started out with no snow and it basically came out of nowhere!). Those people who venture out now are literally risking everything.

Why can’t people on Kijiji post ads properly? If you’re “looking” for a specific item, don’t post it under “offering”, and if you’re offering a weird Rolls Royce limo service for $900, don’t list it under cars as “free”. Like you get your hopes up that some disgruntled ex is selling off their spouses prized assets for free, but it turns out to be some dude selling rides in his car.
