Last Cornell goaltender affiliated with the Flames was Matt Underhill. Doug Dadswell another one. Kent Manderville. Joe Nieuwendyk the obvious and the source of my original connection to the Calgary Flames. So I’m excited to see Galadja invited!

All but 2 of the D-men are free agent invitees - what's up with that??
Andersson & Kylington too seasoned (ok); Hogstrom too old (ok).

Play well, get a place in Stockton??

In the 2018 draft, they took all forwards.

In the 2017 draft, they took 4 forwards + 1 D (valimaki)

In the 2016 draft, they took 2 D out of 8 picks. Those 2 D, Fox and Falkovsky, are now gone from the organization.

The Flames don't have much in the pipeline for D anymore, they only currently have 1 defenceman from the last 3 drafts in their system. In fact assuming Valimaki sticks with Stockton, they won't have a d prospect in the CHL, NCAA, or Europe.

You have to think that the invitee d-men are playing for a contract (or at least an invite to the main camp, where they could get a contract). With the team playing a couple preseason games while the main roster is in China, it could be a big opportunity for some of them.

A few of the CHL invites are over 20, so they could play in the AHL this fall without any problem.

Yeah the doors are wide open for D to come in and earn a bit of a fast track to fairly high up the depth chart in the system.

Will this be Tuulola's third development camp? Am I correct in remembering that prospects are only required to attend two?

From the CBA...

Other than Foo, have there been many other invitees who we sign for stockton or the flams?

These are the D men that would be eligible to join the Heat... Joel Lakusta 20, Igor Merezhko 20, Dalton Hamaliuk 20, and Jordan Ernst 21.

* was +12 in 31 GP after being traded to Ottawa 67s FWIW (ore than 1/2 team were minus players)

Brock Otten (OHL Prospects) had him ranked 22nd of OHLers eligible for 2018 Draft:
"22. Merrick Rippon - Defense - Ottawa 67's
Similar kind of player to Vallati, at least in terms of projectability and that's why they're back to back on this list. Vallati is the better skater, but Rippon is the more physical player. That's definitely a major strength of Rippon's. This guy hits hard. Routinely catches opposing forwards cutting across the blueline and loves finishing his checks when opponents try to get through him off the rush. He'll angle you off and put you through the boards. His mobility is definitely solid too, at least in terms of lateral and backwards agility. His forward stride may not be as powerful and may limit his offensive potential. But defensively, this guy could be a rock. Really felt like his decision making with the puck improved over the course of the season; turnovers in the defensive end became less and less of an issue. I don't really think he'll ever be a huge contributor offensively, but his work in his own end will be very valuable potentially."
http://ohlprospects.blogspot.com/201...r-2018_23.html

From OHL Writers:
"At 6’1” Rippon has decent size for a defender. He is a very good skater who gets to top speed very quickly. He possesses strong edges, very good lateral movement and switches smoothly to skating backwards.

Defensively Rippon plays very calm, seemingly never to get rattled or buckle under pressure. His skating allows him to close gaps very quickly. He’s not afraid to throw a hit to separate the player from the puck. He also uses a very active stick to take away lanes and positions his body in the right places.

Rippon can clear his zone with an excellent first pass. He is capable of slowing the pace down and waiting for options to open up and can then stretch the ice. His skating also allows him to skate out of danger or rush the puck up the ice.

Offensively, I think Rippon is capable of more than what we’ve seen especially now with the 67’s where he gets more opportunity. He sees the ice extremely well and possesses excellent hockey smarts. He has an excellent, heavy and accurate shot from the point. While he can beat a goalie, he sees plays develop and can shoot with a purpose making it difficult for goaltenders to swallow the puck and thus creating a rebound.

Rippon understands the game. He picks his spots and knows when to jump into the play and does so extremely well. He makes very good reads at the offensive blue line and knows when to pinch and when not to. If he gets into trouble, he can usually skate back to redeem himself. He certainly has all the tools to be a top 4 d-man at the next level."

Joel Lakusta? I didn’t even think he was going to make the Cougars as a 20 year old!

Was going to say why do I know none in that defence group. It's all UFA invites.

Stoked to see how Gawdin stacks up with the guys that have gone pro already.

A healthy Gawdin too hopefully. IIRC he was pretty banged up going into the Mem Cup. I expect he is back to top form now.

At this camp I look forward to hear about:

Dillon Dube
Glenn Gawdin
Linus Lindstrom
Matthew Phillips
Adam Ruzicka
Eetu Tuulola

All of these players are in a position where they should be dominating. Each of them are low on the teams prospect depth and have something to prove.
Spencer Foo could also be on that list, but IMO he is going to get a closer look at the main camp than these other players. This camp is not as important for him.

And look at all those awards he's picked up every season along the way. Crazy impressive.
