Barry Trotz informed the organization today of his decision to resign as head coach of the Washington Capitals. We are obviously disappointed by Barry's decision, but would like to thank Barry for all his efforts the past four years and for helping bring the Stanley Cup to Washington. Barry is a man of high character and integrity and we are grateful for his leadership and for all that he has done for our franchise.
If they are not paying Trotz, I don't think they will pay AV's price. In order to make it worth it for AV, he has to get $5M. And then he has to decide whether to just relax for a year.

Dude wins the cup and they low ball him Hahaha. Ya and AV ain't going there if they can't even pony up cash to a coach who was part of the cup win.
I don't think MacLellan was a big fan at this point. If they didn't win a cup this year Trotz would have been fired. Probably felt the team won in spite of Trotz.
Besides Seattle bringing on Tippet, Seattle might not play for at least another 2 years (there is an article today that a group might sue over the Environmental Impact Assessment which will delay the arena construction by at least 4 months). I doubt Trotz wants to sit on the sidelines for that long.

I don't think paying the money to Trotz had anything to do with them low balling him. There has been rumours for awhile that the Caps didn't want him back regardless and he didn't really want to return. I highly doubt either side tried to come to an extension but certainly the Capitals didn't. Money won't be an issue in bringing in a new coach.
