Well, this is a coup for Harper. He cut a LOT of research grants to fund this search. I remember an interview with a woman who had been studying Vikings her whole life. They were right in the midst of excavating a site believed to be an early Viking village in the Canadian north (Baffin Island), when she got the call that her funding had been removed.
OTTAWA — The shipwreck found in the Arctic has been identified as HMS Erebus, the vessel on which Sir John Franklin himself sailed — and may even have perished — in search of the Northwest Passage in 1845.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who took obvious delight last month in delivering news of the discovery of the ship from Franklin’s doomed voyage, revealed Wednesday just which of the two it is.
“I’m delighted to confirm that we have identified which ship from the Franklin expedition has been found,” Harper told the House of Commons.

You have one guess why her funding was cut so that we could find the Franklin.
Coup for Harper? I dunno if I'd go that far. It's a cool story and a bit of history, and obviously he himself has a big interest in it as one can tell by his actions. But outside of a small group, no one really cares. If it's true that he diverted funding from other areas just to do this, then that kinda sucks.
The way some people are talking about it on the news you'd think we landed on the moon. It's an old ship. From a failed expedition no less, lol. And I do love stories like this, but all in context. I'd rather be learning of a whole host of things than looking for an old shipwreck. In fact, the viking thing intrigues me more.
Wow this is pretty amazing. I remember getting nightmares from the books when I was a kid because they had pictures of the frozen and preserved corpses from the 19th century in them. I have always wondered what happened to the crew that set out from those ships and disappeared hauling long boat sledges across the arctic...

The side scanner is sweet, we found a sunken fishing boat at one of our favourite spots. Paints a great picture.

I have not heard anyone anywhere in the media mention the amusing contrast between the gag order Harper has on federal researchers and yet there is no muzzling order on this "pet" project that has yielded approved results.
