Let's look at the league:
Boston: Rask (7M), Halak (2.5M)
Buffalo: Hutton (2.75M), Ullmark (1.3M)
Detroit: Howard (4M), Bernier (3M)
Florida: Bobrovsky (10M), Driedger (850K)
Montreal: Price (10M), Lindgren (750K)
Ottawa: Anderson (4.75M), Hoberg (700K)
Tampa: Vasilevskiy (3.5M, next year is 9M), McElhinney (1.3M)
Toronto: Andersen (5M), Campbell (675K, next year is 1.67M)
Carolina: Mrazek (3.12M), Reimer (3.4M)
Columbus: Merzlikins (ELC, next year is 4M), Korpisalo (1.15M, next year is 2.8M)
New Jersey: Schneider (6M), Blackfoot (697K, next year is RFA)
NY Islanders: Varlamov (5M), Greiss (3.33M)
NY Rangers: Lundqvist (8.5M), Shesterkin (ELC), Georgiev (ELC)
Philadelphia: Hart (ELC), Elliott (2M)
Pittsburgh: Murray (3.75M), Jarry (675K), DeSmith (1.25M in AHL)
Washington: Holtby (6M), Samsonov (ELC)
Chicago: Crawford (6M), Subban (750K)
Colorado: Grubauer (3.33M), Francouz (950K)
Dallas: Bishop (4.9M), Khudobin (2.5M)
Minnesota: Dubnyk (4.83M), Stalock (785K)
Nashville: Rinne (5M), Saros (1.5M)
St. Louis: Binnington (4.4M), Allen (4.35M)
Winnipeg: Hellebuyck (6.16M), Brossoit (1.22M)
Anaheim: Gibson (6.4M), Miller (1.12M)
Arizona: Raanta (4.25M), Kuemper (1.85M, next year is 4.5M)
Calgary: Rittich (2.75M), Talbot (2.75M)
Edmonton: Smith (2M), Koskinen (4.5M)
LA: Quick (5.8M), Petersen (858K)
San Jose: Jones (5.75M), Dell (1.9M)
Vancouver: Markstrom (3.66M), Demko (1.05M), Domingue (1.15M)
Vegas: Fleury (7M), Lehner (5M, money being retained by CHI)
The only "useless" 5M+ contracts are Martin Jones and Cory Schneider. The reality is you can't win a Stanley Cup without top tier goaltending. The one exception to this in recent times is Antti Niemi during the first Chicago cup run.
The only hope the Flames have in net right now is Dustin Wolf, and if we somehow don't screw up his development you know what he'll need if we want to win a stanley cup? A top tier goalie ready to mentor him at the NHL level.
...making that list really bummed me out. It really hammered home that we have what is either the worst or 2nd worst goaltending in the playoffs.
