Most sportsmanlike planet? Well glad to hear that we're getting a player with rings already.

Speaks to the organization valuing character when considering who to draft

For I guy I have heard characterized as "the absolute opposite of a perimeter player", this is a nice surprise. Always loved the guys who played hard without going over the line. Kid seems like a player.

EDIT: Zavgorodniy was also a finalist. Awesome!

Never understood the appeal for this award. Like yeah sure congrats on being nice and respectful, but is that going to help you in the war of a 7 game series? Its basically a flyer for opposing players letting them know they can give you #### without the fear of getting it back.

I am not a fan of this award at all, I don't want a bunch of guys like Hudler, I want more Tkachuck type guys. I thought this kid was supposed to be more like Marchand.

Well he can be used as a live experiment to see if the Wideman effect can survive the Covid 19 Pandemic.

No kidding! High IQ, competitive two-way players who score, crash the paint, and have non-stop motors in the defensive zone but do so while playing a supremely disciplined brand of hockey resulting in annual Lady Byng votes get you nowhere.

Patrice Bergeron? Anze Kopitar? Ryan O'Reilly? Pavel Datsyuk? Martin St. Louis? Nik Lidstrom? Patrick Kane? Sasha Barkov? Marian Hossa? Tough to win with "soft" players like that, especially in a 7-game series.

Not the biggest guy, but relentless, fearless and shifty? Competitive as hell? Sounds a bit like Joey Mullen.

The awards for the bolded categories are probably more correlated to playoff success.
Ragnar is saying that gentlemanly conduct is a bad trait. It's just a pretty useless trait when compared to things like defensive awareness.
Really, the main positive byproduct of gentlemanly conduct is that you don't take dumb penalties. And that's nice, but like you say, players such as Ryan O'Reilly can still play competitively while not taking penalties.
