It really annoys me that we keep giving money to 30+ over the hill garbage UFAs, leaving the flames out of contention on some pretty decent UFAs in their prime.
Which 30+ year old over the hill garbage UFA did the Flames sign this off-season? There's been two big misses in Brouwer and Neal but let's not make it out that it's some annual thing with the organization.

He’s an awesome player who I wish was still a Flame. Good signing by the Nucks.

Congratulations, Ferland. There isn't a city I'd rather be rich in than Vancouver.

I’d like to see him do something for the good of the team.

...people seem to be assuming I only wanted him to go out and do something stupid that would hurt the team?

Lest we forget Mason Raymond and Jonas Hiller.

Plus there’s still time for Tre to overpay Maroon.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and predict Bennet has to scrap him after ferland rocks someone next season. It will be a hell of a fight, but not one I actually want to see.

Hiller was a great signing in the first year. It helped that Hartley seemed to have a magic touch when it came to choosing when to end a starting run by each goalie.

Ryan 32 - good contract
Neal 31 - bad contract
Frolik 31 - good contract originally, last year on it
Backlund 30 - fair contract

How does this qualify as 'keep giving money to 30+ over the hill garbage UFAs'? There are few teams in the league that would have less money allocated to 30+ year olds.

Hiller was a main reason the Flames made the playoffs in 2014/15 and that contract was fair value. Raymond wasn't 30 year old over the hill player as he came off a 45 point season with the Leafs and was just a player who's career ended abruptly.

Our only way to combat this move to convince Bieksa to come out of retirement.

He really shouldn't fight.
Yeah, further to that, I see real question marks around Ferland away from the ice as well.

I think consistency of effort is a real thing and I think it's been a main issue in Ferland not crossing that threshold.

It's not some big deal or anything, I just as a rule wouldn't be giving term to guys like that. I'd rather pay a bit more up front for the increased flexibility.

The Canucks now have a log jam of forwards, I expect a trade or two will happen soon.

Welcome Ferkland!
It's not the number of games he's missed that's the issue. It's the type of injury, and how he plays when he returns each time. Like some have said, he's a bad hit from early retirement.

They could create a new 2nd line, simply because they didn't have one before.

This lineup is better than the Oilers, sure - if that is the bar to be achieved. But it is still a pretty mediocre lineup, and they are now a cap team. Nothing here scares me, as a Flames' fan.

Oh come on, you may have hated him as a player but he is quite quick-witted on screen. He's one of those guys that will transitions seamlessly into a broadcast role.

I just don't see it. But yes, I might have pre-existing bias getting in the way. Give it time I suppose.

it's 2 back to back screw ups though which are, combined, costing the flames $7.25M in aav this year. That's pretty ridiculous.

All Treliving did last year was significantly improve the top line at both ends of the ice, and create a situation where the top two D pairings was much more optimal. Plus adding a fourth line C that helped a lot.
