Ownership says he quit and he says that ownership created the situation. Normally I would say the truth is in the middle but if he was entertaining an offer to leave I'm not sure how he can pin this on the Coyotes as an organization can't afford to have a GM that's not 100% committed.

Curious to what team was looking at his body of work thinking "we gotta have that!"?

The NHL club in question is almost-certainly the Sabres. Chayka's hometown is not too far from Buffalo and Botterill was fired almost exactly 6 weeks ago.

With the statement that the offer wasn't from another NHL team, it could mean it's a position higher-up in Pegula's organization, who also owns the Bills and other sports resources around Buffalo.

Hard position for a team to be in. You extend your GM thinking you have the right guy and letting him out of that deal basically puts you back to square one in regards to starting all over again with a new GM so I can see why the Coyotes wouldn't be happy. As for Chayka he should have negotiated a clause in his contract allowing him to interview for higher up opportunities if he wasn't 100% committed to being their for 3 more years.

That Coyotes statement is one of the most unprofessional things I've read from a sports franchise.

How can ownership be upset when they are the ones that granted permission for Chayka to look elsewhere, and then balk when it turns out to be a real opportunity?

So ownership didn’t wanna just let him walk, and having a multibillionaire owner you don’t really mess with someone like that in their business. John will not see another position as a general manager or hockey operations in the NHL for at least 3 to 4 years. Good job bud

Ownership was first told that it was not in the hockey business. Which ended up to be a lie

It’s also a fact of what transpired. He lied to the team, the players and every member of the organization at a CRITICAL time.

$%^& that guy. He is an ego maniac with nothing to back it up. The way he forced Doan’s retirement in a public setting was his first order of stick swinging.

Pretty sure Chayka is going to get to do whatever he wants, since he obviously quit to go explore whatever that opportunity is. Plus, everyone knows the Coyotes are a garbage franchise where the clock is ticking. I’m sure Chayka could have longer career as a GM ahead of him than the Coyotes have as a franchise located in Arizona, if that’s what he wants.

The coyotes are kind of like any entry level job. A great way to get your feet wet and learn some life skills, but not where you're going to make your career at. At least not until they have any sustained success.

Then why did he re-up for 4 years this past november? That new owner gave him. That he is still bound to, you don't just quit on a contract. You're still bound to it's terms

He's slime

You may not always like it when someone resigns from a job. But it’s usually in everyone’s best interests to take the high road. Or at a minimum, when you can’t think of anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.

I don’t see the Coyotes organization did themselves any good at all by releasing such a bitter message.

It shows it's dedication to the fans, the staff on the team who are dedicated and that's all we really care about.

The team will be run as a family and it's refreshing to see.

Doesn’t matter if it’s factual or not. If the team is upset and wants to call him every name in the book behind closed doors, fine, I get it. But you can’t have a temper tantrum for a press release as a pro team. The Coyotes have always been a 2nd rate gong show, stuff like that isn’t going to help, as much as it may be true.

Quitting right after signing an extension and right before the playoffs sure is a bad look for Chayka though.

Both parties seem to have handled this in the worst manner possible.

I totally get why you're pissed (see Fox, Adam and Erixon, whogivesa####) about having someone quit on the team especially given the timing. At the time of re-upping, Chayka signing for 4 years was the best option for him, but that changed.

Is he even bound to the contract? I wouldnt think so if he terminated it but I have no idea how those contracts are built.
